Hot hot hot!

Hi all,
Just started using my 406 again after 7 months (been using a mondeo) and have got everything running except for one thing. As soon as i turn the ignition on the temp guage shoots straight to the red and stays there. The engine was deffo cold and no matter what the temp it seems sure that its overheating when its not! The temp guage previously worked perfectly!!
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
James

The engine coolant temperature sensor is faulty.

That looks like the part.
You can change it yourself, it's only about undoing a nut and removing a connection.Later ones involve removing a clip that holds the sensor in.
You could probably buy one from a local factor.
I have changed a few on the HDi's but not on the petrol, on the diesel they are located on the right side of the cylinder head as you look at the windscreen from the front of the car (behind the air filter box).

You didn't say which 2.0 petrol it is. On the 2.0 8v turbo it's on the rear of the thermostat housing, so you'll either need to remove the housing or use a deep socket to remove it. Dunno about the 16v

Just 2.0 16v.
Its worth noting that the fans seem to come in when it would be around 100degrees so that all seems to be working. Just the gauge.

Replaced the sensor (got from CAF), took 2 seconds and works perfectly.
Thanks all!!
