406HDI, lack of power

Hi I have just bought a 406hdi 02reg, It seems to have a lack of power on hills, apears to drive OK around town, but on duel carrage way when it comes to hills or you put your foot down at 70ish to over take it doesent want to pick up. which makes me think turbo issue, i have checked all pipes and they are OK no blowing or sucking, some times it feels like the turbo? is cutting ing on lowish revs ie pulling away at lights etc but seems to decrese as your spead /revs increase which confuses me as shouldnt the turbo work at higher revs?
Also the car seems to more fuel than i expected. I use the car for work and do 70 miles a day all duel carrage way I am getting roughly 40mph is ths about right as It seems low to me. I have upgraded from a mondeo deisel and was getting approx 55mp so was expecting about the same from the pug. Would it be worth buying a cheap dyno tool from ebay to help find the problem or would it be better to take to a garage and need a lottery win to pay.

Hello & welcome
There can be many causes for lack of power / increased fuel consumption. Assume you've tried tyre pressures, binding brakes etc.?
If you don't know your car's history, changing the air & fuel filters can't hurt.
Is yours a Hdi 90 or 110?

Hi thanks fro the reply I had already checked all of the simpleish remidiys
after reading through the 50odd pages on here I gambled & got another MAF from the scrappers today for the princely sum of £5,"absolute bargin" Drive home was a lot better seemed to have a lot more poke.
Noticed that some have had theirs remapped I will use mine for towing a caravan any advice as to benifits/drawbacks would be greatfuly appreciated
Log book arrived to day & its only a 90

Hello again.
Thought I had been clever & sorted the fault but NO & now its worse.
Car had been parked up for 3 days as been away, started the car this morning joined the traffic at the end of the road as usual all seemed fine got to the duel carrageway 2 miles away put me foot down & nothing, no guts whatsoever, turbo dosent apear to cut in, to get a respectable 60mph I had to almost push my foot through the floor,

got to work 40 painfull miles later, popped the bonnet at lunch & checked all obvious leads, plugs, hoses etc all look OK. hoped it may have been a glitch & would be ok when restarted no such luck, journey home was worse as there are a couple of steep hills on way home speed dropped to about 40 even changing down made no difference, (embarrasing when lorries overtake you on hills)

there was no warning to this, there have been no warning lights or fault messages since I ve had the car 3 weeks now.
Any body have any ideas where to start looking for the fault. could the engine have gone into limp mode without warning if so how do I check it is that. As I have said only had the car 3 weeks so any help woud be realy appreciated as I'm feeling a little peed off at the minute and afraid Ive been sold a pup.

Benefits - huge gains in drivability and fuel consumption, drawbacks - umm, you probably should tell your insurers (and how exactly would they know?)
I was also wondering about your driving style there,

Diesels aren't that good at higher revs, these HDis even less: mine seriously runs out of puff over 3 grand.

I pull mine back EVERY time I get in the car, and have done for some time... since I got the throttle wedged UNDER the mat. Brown trousers time, that

My driver side mats are actually held on my some plastic pins but they don't tend to hold them well...

Further off topic: I got some cheap 'n' cheerful rubber ones from one of the big diy stores here for last winter and they're still going strong. They're universal ones, biggest I could find (gets very muddy here) so I had to cut out around the fuel tank pull etc. They don't go nowhere! Makes a change anyway, I usually buy carpet ones in the spring and rubber ones in the autumn and they're usually falling to bits by then.

Had a similar issue driving a bus, I must have dropped a ticket roll on the floor & it rolled underthe break pedal. boy did I panic fortunatley the lights changed just in time. I then managed to knock the roll out with my foot. stopped the buss at next bus stop & had a fag, passenges blissfully unaware thank God
