Overtaking - ahhh no brake servo!

Post by seismic22 »

Hi there,

Was down devon the other day and went to over take someone but before hand slowed as i approached the car infront and the brake pedal suddenly went hard! No brake servo! Went down through the gears and pulled over using all my wieght on the pedal to eventually stop! Checked fluids, and had a general look, drove off slowly and did thje same thing again. Pulled over again checked everything, checked for any noises or any split pipes etc and checked the pressure of the servo wth the car running, all fine!! Drove around a car park brake testing and then drove off and the brakes were fine! drove all way back bristol with out any trouble and been fine since,

anyone had this trouble before????, what the hell could it be because everything works again! If it had been servo failure then it would just stop working all together! It is a little worrying. Only two things that may affect opinions on here is 1. the undertray was off and i did fly through some gigantic puddles! 2. the abs ring on drivers side is off at the mo cos it cracked and the abs is therefore obv not working.

Any ideas?! cheers

Cheers

Vacuum pipe to the servo?
406 estate, 2.1TD, I fixed her, then part exchanged her for a Mercedes E300TD Avantgarde Estate.

Vacuum pump, reservoir, problem with vacuum pipe(s)? You've got several vacuum operated actuators for turbo boost control, egr, maybe more.

My bet's the vacuum pipe, or the servo itself. Given how critical this is, I'd suggest a visit to a scrappy asap - can't see a used replacement costing much

I think there'd have to be something wrong with the ECU for the ABS unit to cause this, and you'd definitely hear if it was, so that can be ruled out.

Only other thing's the master cylinder, but if that were shot you'd have different symptoms
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Thanks for the suggestions, one of them is probably right. I have had to drive it (albeit cautiously) like it is ever since the incident due to work commitments and have done another 200+ miles like it without even a hint of a problem, anyone suggest why this seems like a one off fault? I had the car checked out due to time constraints by my old local garage and they could find nothing wrong what so ever!

Thanks
