As I am driving along the motorway at a speed of 70 mph My 2000 x reg 406 Hdi 110 switches off and then it starts up again, I managed to cure the problem by driving 60 mph but it cuts off again it happened 3-5 times yesturday so I left it home today and took my dad's car it only cuts off on the motorway it is fine on the local roads.

Also when I turn the car off and take the key out and lock the car the ingintion comes on automatically and the clocks come on

Any help would be appreciated of what the problem is. Many thanks.

Suggest taking it to a dealer to read any stored faults

Have you fit an aftermarket stereo?

Yes I have an aftermarket stereo fitted. Forgot to mention the turbo on the car no longer kicks in it feels sluggish when changing gears

In that case you've probably got the permanent and ignition-switched 12v lines switched on the stereo, or you've wired something up to one of the three VAN bus lines on the connector.

what could I do to prevent this should I disconnect the stereo?

Sudden stops on a HDi can be a couple of things:

The in-tank fuel pump (does it sound really grumbly when you turn on the ignition?) the fuel supply can be interupted by the pump stopping - although it doesn't normally do this whilst driving along.

The crank sensor may be faulty and telling the ECU that the engine has stoped running and to cut the fuel.

Is the ignition switch sound? if it's really worn then (as it warms up) the key could creep back to the off position - not a common fault but I have seen it on a Citroen ignition.

To be honest only a good code read will help, as with all modern cars there's a lot of sensors and stuff to check.

As an aside: got a massive bunch of keys hanging out your ignition lock? That's a good way to make it fail...

As regards the stereo, try disconnecting again and see if it makes a difference. It may just be coincidence with the sudden death thing but you never know.
