Hello

I have a 1996 406 1.9td its a pigto start in the morning. It turns over fine and trys to fire and then justturns over again. Eventually it dose start but its getting worse with the cold weather.Iv put new glowplugs in but i still have the same problem. The car also takes abit of starting when warm but nothing like when cold. Anyone with any idea please.

Have you checked that you have power to the glow plugs?

Connect a test lamp to the battery earth and any of the wires going to the glow plugs, turn on the ignition, the lamp will light up if you have power to the glow plugs.
If you do not have power, the relay is most likely your problem, sometimes the nuts holding the wires on come loose or corrode.Another way to check the relay is to connect a thick wire across the terminals then switch on the ignition with the test lamp connected, the lamp should light up.

You could also use a volt meter.

Fuel line leak? I think there's a bulb you can squeeze to pressurise the system, if it starts ok when you do this then you could have a leak somewhere.

Iv squeezed the bulb and still have trouble starting the car.I will cheak i have power to the glow plugs tomorrow.

Once the car starts its fine, only gives off a bit of black smoke when i put my foot down.

mmmmm, cold weather, as above stick a meter on the glow plugs. How's your battery and alternator?

Battery and alternator are good.

Iv got power to the glow plugs everything seems fine there.

Im going to have the fuel pump timing checked, iv no idea how to do this myself so could anyone give me any idea how long it might take check it, and if timing is out how long to put right.

im having the same problem at the moment.

At first i thought it could be my battery on the way out, so i tested it, i got 11.8V when it had been sat all night (suggesting it was draining), then 14.4V whilst it was running (alternators working then), and 12.8V after id been for a drive. then a friend of mine told me to check for alternator diode leakage, but i haven't gotten that far yet.

i'll let you know if i find anything that might help

Don't put the cart before the horse - replace your glow plugs first and see if that helps.

A mistimed engine would not really make a difference between hot and cold starts.

Well i'm still no wiser to my starting problem,the car runs fine when it eventually starts.still a sod to start when hot but not as bad as when cold.

I used a small amount of easy start this morning it worked straight away, but i dont like the stuff.

Battery and alternator good, new glow plugs, power and relay ok to the plugs.

That's starting to look like a pump issue
