Alternator replacement

Hi there,
Just stumbled across this excellent site and thought I'd post a quick question relating to the replacement of the alternator on my 1999, 2.0 HDI LX (130k miles)
I have a guy coming tomorrow to replace the alternator on my pug (repacement one from scrappy's yard - guaranteed 3 months), question is, as i don't have any rest codes for this car, is he ok to disconnect the battery without any disabling issues kicking in...? I did see an earier post about a similar question but it didn't really come up with a clear answer as to a 'YES' or 'NO'.....??? Also the car got distinctly sluggish, in 1st & 2nd gear a good few weeks before the alternator issue (previous to that the grunt was fine) are these related or should I be looking for something else...?? All filters (fuel, air, oil) were replaced before the sluggish problem appeared, should I be looking at this as a possible cause...?? :?
Any help appreciated.

Many Thanks.
