When reinstalling the egr valve after cleaning it (what an absolute nightmare of a job! lucky i have small hands) i saw that the inlet manifold was filled up with oily gunk, tried to scrape out as much as possible and sprayed some gt85 up there and wiped some out from the egr end but didnt feel like i had got it all out. I needed the car back on the road that day and time was running out (so was the skin on my knuckles) so i left it how it was.

Majorly lacking any time at the moment, busy 7 days a week. Is there anything i can spray up the air intake etc that could help to clean it out, rather than having to taking it off?

I'm not really sure, you could possibly spay some sort of solvent in there, or perhaps something like easy start, but then all that crud plus solvent would end up in your engine. You couldn't really do it while it's running either 'cos it would rather involve taking all the inlet ducts off.

What difference to the engine has cleaning the VGR value done ? My old pug has done 190000 nearly, a bit smokey on first start up and lacks power up hills these days , friend said try cleaning out the VGR value , asked the garage to have a look if they had time after I handed a list of jobs to get the car in shape again , but the thread which holds it on was to corroded to try and remove. Is it worth getting it sorted ?
