Post by Cragus22 »

hey guys i snapped my clutch rod and now i just orderd a new hydraulic system slave and oil resivoir etc (all in one), heres a pic to jog your memories, so any tips on fitting would be amazing, i hope it a straight fit? what parts do i need to remove to gain enough room? 1 other thing, the resivoir pipe looks too short?

thanks in advance

oooOOOooo a brand new one! First of all, it looks right :)

First thing to do is disconnect the master cylinder. Near the top of the clutch pedal will be a ball which the cup on your new master cylinder will push onto. Pull this off (it may be the cup that's broken on yours, so you don't need to pull it off...).

Open the bonnet, unclip the reservoir (push it sideways if memory serves).

You should be able to work out which bit sticking out of the bulkhead is the master cylinder now. Seems like it should be a lot lower doesn't it? Push it in and twist it anticlockwise like a very stiff light bulb to remove it. It may require a lot of pressure...

Now free up the slave. To do this, undo the jubilee clip on the back of the air filter box and pull the box upwards after freeing off any attached cables/pipes (the clips for these just pop open if you wedge a screwdriver in and twist. They're pretty robust!). Now you should be able to see the black slave cylinder at the front top of the gearbox. Again, push in and twist anticlockwise. This may be difficult.

You may have to unclip stuff to free the bulk of the pipe, but you shouldn't have any trouble working out what.

Now fitting the new one is the above in reverse, however I think (never seen a new one before) you may need to remove that beige plastic cap from the slave. The haynes says new ones have a little plastic clip holding the piston in which should be left in place and will break off when you press the pedal, but that's not little!!! In fact I doubt it'll even fit into the clutch housing, so see if you can carefully remove it without pulling the piston out

Took me about an hour the first time I swapped that unit between two cars. The last time I did it it took about 15 minutes from bonnets up to bonnets down!

If you get stuck, post up a pic and we'll help
