The old sodding wet footwell syndrome!
Hi there,
When i bought the pug a few months back, i bought it full well knowing that there was a minor electrical fault. Since owning it looked into it and it seems its the old, wet footwell, casuing the multiplex plug to corrode etc etc. The car got written off by peugeot under warranty becuase after cleaning the multiplex plug and bagging it up and it then working for a while fine it then started doing it again.
I have not looked under the carpet yet but i suspect that the plug is corroded again etc. I dont think they should have bagged it up as that would only turn any moisture in the bag around the plug etc into water and corrode the plug again.
The symptoms of the car currently are as follows. Heated rear screen turns on for 2 seconds then goes off (will not stay on) have no temperature reading on screen and cannot flick through any of the "average trip, mpg etc" figures on dash. The cars bsi screen on the centre console also automatically comes on as soon as you open the door (with or without keys in) and will not shut down for at least 3- 5 mins after the car has been turned of. The car does not remember any of the temperature settings and always automatically goes to 14 degrees blowing into the footwell when you get in the car. The air con does not work either and i dont think it just needs regassing as on a diagnostic read out i got it shows it not to be responding
The car does NOT have a sun roof btw!
I intend to pull the carpet up, cut the multiplex plug out and solder all the wires solid together, then there can definately be no corrosion of connectors. I got this idea from a peugeot specialist and think it to be the best idea.
What do you guys think?! ( sorry about essay again)
Cheers

I've heard of someone doing that before. Let's face it, it can't make it any worse...

I think the first thing to do should be to remove the rear light clusters, clean them up and maybe bolster up the seals with some silicone sealant. Then empty the swimming pool that used to serve as a spare wheel well
There's a lot of wires to solder up...

You need to address where the water's coming from too!
Door lining splash/drip membranes?
Below windscreen splashdeck/bulkhead guard?
Rear doors?
Door seals?
Rear light clusters?
Most 406's stay pretty dry tbh

Well the footwell does now appear to be dry, however the spare wheel well does like to hold some water so removing the rear lights is a must i think.
Yeah the fact there are so many is whats put me off, but im determined to sort the problem and have a weekend free coming up!
Yeah i agree that i cant make it any worse by doing it. I just gota get stretching because its going to be bloody awkward soldering down there.
Other than disconnecting the battery, anyone got any advise for soldering those particular wires? I cant screw anything up by reconnecting in the wrong order or any other m'larky??
cheers

Not if the battery's off you can't.
It might be a bit much to shrink wrap each individual wire but you should sleeve them with something - maybe even shrinkwrap but not shrunk. Insulting tape doesn't last forever... Check each plug to see if the wires coming out of both sides are the same - don't assume they are! I think I'd probably do them one wire at a time even if they are the same - cut, strip, join, sleeve, then do the next. But then I'm mad and would heat shrink each individual wire (not really, I used to join cables together for BT - compared to a 4,800 pair cable the wires under your carpet are a piece of cake

Hi all, I was getting mad with that problem too. this is the first day that I realised the footwell is becoming a swiming pool.
I wonder, where does the water come from?
I have no sunroof, wellfine splash guard under the wiper, not so bad door seal.
are there any suspected site where the water can flow inside? my friend told me that there are holes under the carpet, at the deck? is that true? since I cant found it.
thanks everyone

Re: The old sodding wet footwell syndrome!
i have had this problem latley on my 04 hdi 90
corroded plug and the car doing crazy things
i have the plug cleaned and found where the water was coming from(bulkhead drain blockage)
plug worked ok for 4-5 days but the problems are starting to return so im gonna solder mine also and that will end it all.
think i will do one wire at a time so i dont make a bawz of it

Re: The old sodding wet footwell syndrome!
This problem is such a pain, i visited someone recently with a D9 V6 Coupe where the car wouldn't start, as soon as ignition came on the headlights flashed, wipers turned on and the key transponder was not recognised, all that was causing this was one single corroded connector in the multi block, once we joined it the car was fine and completely fault free on PP2000.
Somone on the Coupe forum had the same type of problem back in Nov 2011 and cut off the connectors (it was so bad several cables were loose anyway from corrosion) to directly wire and individually heat wrap the wires.

Re: The old sodding wet footwell syndrome!
My rear footwells got soaked after a heavy rain.
Found out that the water that came in from the window seal ran on the inside of the spalsh guard and then in to the car.
My fix was to add a plastic inside the door so the water definatly stayed inside the doors and could then exit through the drains in the door.
(Previous owner had tried to fix this by sealing the interior panel with silicone)
