hello again all , im new to peugeot's , i have a 1.8 lx 1998 r reg saloon and when i put £10 of petrol in it barely comes out of the red , is there a warning other than the red/orange dot lighting up on the fuel gauge or does car just cut out ?.

i press the trip meter and get 45 mile to £10 then the needle has gone through red and cant read any lower but i dont want to let car cut out and suck crap off bottom of tank , the car runs superb and im just trying to gauge mpg 45 seems a bit low anyone else got a 1.8 lx know what i should be getting ? .

Your engine is probably the same as mine (I've got the 1.8l 1999 model).

The tank has between 65 and 70l capacity. On average, I get about 350 - 400 miles before the light comes on. Granted, I sit in traffic a lot every day to/from work though (more than an hour to travel the 7 miles back home from work, sometimes as much as 2 hours).

If I just do motorway miles, then I can usually get 550 miles to a full tank.

I have no trip computer in my LX-spec D9, so I can't really help you with regards to what the car thinks I should be getting.

Cheers
Graeme

45 miles to a tenner sounds good to me, especially with the price of petrol these days. If i put a tenner in mine i get 40 miles if im lucky, and with the light on about 25miles. Ive not wanted to take it any further than that. If i remember correctly, when the red light comes on you have a gallon and a half left in the tank.

I have no constructive input to this thread,

but by god im glad ive got an hdi, if thats what a 1.8 petrol does to the gallon

sorry but after a couple of hours in the cold fighting my dead fuel pump and a hefty chunk gone from my wallet today, this is what i needed to remind me why i went diesel. :P

sorry just wanted to be happy about the old oil burner for once.

I gauge D8 fuel gauges by turning the ignition on when the car's parked on the flat. If the needle flinches ever so slightly, you've got less than a litre left in the pipes. That was on my cars though, and may not be the same on yours. The only other warning is that the fuel pump will make a racket when it's pumping air. You've got seconds left.

I typically fill a 406 with 75 litres, with the most I've fit in being just over 78 litres.

You know it's going to be a tricky day when the needle doesn't move when you start the engine!
