New problem has reared its ugly head.

was wondering if i could pick all your brains about a new fault. Basically the car wouldnt start today after a journey. Went to start it again to get to work and it wouldnt fire, tryed and tryed and tryed and nothing, then went back to it later and it fired up but died again a mile into my journey. it has a quarter of a tank of fuel and i put an extra gallon in, just in case. It tryed to start when the recovery man was there but it was only for a second or so.

The glow plugs ignition light did not come on today either.

Has anyone had a similar experience as i cant get the car to a garage.

Lift pump? Can you hear it running when you first turn the car on (before you start it of course)? Glowplug light depends on temperature - mine's on for half a second these days but much over zero and it's so quick you miss it, after a journey I wouldn't expect to see it at all. Might be worth putting a meter across it to check of course.

is that situated in teh tank and feeds the high pressure pump at the engine, not madly clued up on diesels im afraid

I had the same thing only a couple of weeks ago.

If it is the lift pump its a really simple job, just lift up the back seat base drivers side, move the soundproofing to one side and there is a big black blind grommet about 6" in diameter remove this, and the pump is directly below it in the top of the tank.

you will need to unplug the fuel lines from it, just quick release couplings really easy, then unplug the Electrical connector.

after that your going to need to undo the large locking ring that secures the pump to the tank, some people recommend a filter chain or really wide mole grips, I will be honest and admit i warmed it up with a fan heater (it was -4 outside when i was doing this) and then carefully drifted the ring round using a a little gentle persuasion and a 2lb hammer and a 1/2"drive extension bar as it had a nice solid end that wasnt going to split the ring. but be careful not to try hitting it too hard, slow and steady seemed the way forward.

once the ring is undone just manipulate it out of the hole below the seats and then lift the pump out, beware the pump holds a good amount of diesel in the bottom of it and will try and leak stinking diesel onto the floor/seat base/ carpets and you.

Once its out fitting the new one is basically the reverse of the process, doing it myself saved me best part of 200 quid, as for the cost of the pump, well mine was the Bosch lift pump and the best price i could find matched with availability was 148 quid from GSF thats Vat Inc i think so all in all it cost me 12 quid taxi fare to GSF and back plus the pump so 160 all in and the local "specialist" wanted best part of 360 for doing it

If when you turn the ignition key to pos 2 you cant hear it running for a couple of seconds then there is a good chance thats what it is, if you need any pics of stuff let me know i did a full set of pics with the intent of doing a write up and then life over took me and there is so so much to do in the next 4 weeks before i move out to Poland with the wife and little un

excellent, so what am i listening for a slight whining sound from under the rear seats when the ignition is sitched on?

Whining, whirring, humming noise, might help to lift the seats.

If you don't turn the starter, the noise should stop after about 10 seconds, each time you turn on the ignition.

well to update this, the car got a diagnostic check and it came up with a lift pump fault as had been suggested in this thread, thank you by the way. Replaced the pump for like 160 quid, fired up, great but the idle was lumpy and stuttering intermittantly however the car died on the motorway on the way home today grrr

just a note that the glowplug dash display light has not been working for a while, before this cutting out occured, it was a pain to start today, i can understand the glow plugs not working on cold start up but why would this affect the engine once running and going along a motorway?? this leads me to believe that glow plugs can be ruled out as i was under the impression that they are just for initial startup?

How low was the tank when you changed the pump?
did you pick up and crud from the bottom of the tank when the pump was changed, did you do the fuel filter at the same time? I have heard people say the 2 should be done together, but with mine just swapped the pump and all has been well since.

keep us informed whats going on mate, hopefully somebody will be along with a bit more useful info than i can give, sorry bud my only input is from experience.

majority of forum info is from experience so its all good. The pump was changed with about a third of a tank so atleast 20 litres fuel. Fuel filter wasnt changed.

another update, the lift pump was changed and it seemed to cure the fault for all of half an hour, took it too the garage and was informed number 2 injector pipe was leaking which i was told was giving a drop in pressure in the system, the high pressure pump was trying to compensat and then hit an over pressure switch, i thought ok but didnt fully beleive the theory, anyway the garage replaced this leaking pipe and guess what? yeap problem still not solved, then he says apparently the seal n the new lift pump is leaking and its basically pumping back into tank rather than sending full pressure down the fuel line, already cost 500 quid and now the garage is saying its also possibly the high pressure pump, argh!

have you had it read with peugeot planet and got a list of fault codes ?, if so, post them here for us to have a look at
