Steering does not feel right at speed

Post by judgelaw »

Hi,

Over the last 3 months, ive noticed that when travelling at speed, the steering does not feel as it should.

For instance, on the motorway, if you turn the steering wheel a little to take a gentle bend, it feels as tho the car is not turning as much as it should, but then after a few seconds it might turn in correctly. However, if you turn the steering even more, it will slowly turn a little better, but then suddenly turn in too much.

Sometimes the effect is worse if the turning is timed to coincide with a bump.

I assuming this may be suspension/bush related.

Any ideas?

Thanks

I'd say you're probably right there, get under there with a crow bar and look for play in the track rod ends and ball joints, bushes etc. Is the problem more pronounced in one direction than the other?

You haven't had cheapo tyres put on have you? :?

Dont forget worn rear suspension components can have as much influence on stability etc etc. If the front looks ok, have a look at the rear horizontal top links as they can affect alignment / handling etc etc

Quick thought, was it only the V6 that had progressive steering or any other models?

I thought it was all models that had the speedo control box, so V6, 2L Turbo and 2.1TD, that had the progressive steering (at least my 2.1TD has it).
