Be gentle with me!

Post by briangriffin »

Hello, This is my first posting so be gentle with me, please!.
After a break of about three years, I have bought myself another 406. It's a 2003 HDI Rapier 90 saloon and I've only had it about three weeks so it still has a guarantee from the dealer. I'm not certain if I have a problem with the brakes, but I have noticed that when braking at less than 20 mph,on a dry straight road, there are times when I can feel a bumping/knocking sensation coming up through the brake pedal. I can't always make it produce this feeling and the brakes pull me up well, the car only passed it's MOT 3 weeks ago , the only advisory being that the discs were rusty through inactivity, this rust has now been cleared by being used. I don't think that the discs are warped because the brakes don't judder so I wonder if the ABS is cutting in when it shouldn't or if this is just a characteristic of the 406. I should add that I have had many cars with ABS, including an earlier 406, but I have never noticed this feeling before. I would like to get it sorted while the guarantee is still valid so that the dealer can do any work and pay for it too!!!!. Many thanks.

Welcome in Brian, glad to have you! :)
For starters I would pop the wheels off and check the condition of the sliding pins on the calipers. Wire brush and copper grease are the order of the day!

Sounds like the ABS is being activated, possibly a faulty sensor or 'toothed ring' on the drive shaft. I'd get it back to the dealer to sort out asap.

Hello again, thanks for the answers so far. I have booked it in for Thursday morning and hope that it can be sorted. One problem with it, is that it is an intermittent problem and I just hope that it plays up for the mechanics on the day.
I'll keep you posted!.

Just received a phone call from the dealer, he said that ABS rings are "fractured" both sides, so with a bit of luck I should get it back tomorrow !. Hope it cures it.

I received another phone call from the garage this afternoon. It seems that the guy who is working on my car has been called away due to a family illness. I sympathise with him, but this means that I will not now collect the car until next week. The problem now for me is that I am beginning to fall for the loan car in a big way and, whisper this, the loan car is not a Peugeot!!!!. I must resist the temptation..........

I hate to admit that it's a Ford Focus H/B. So easy to park, get in and out of and it hasn't got climate control but it does have air-con. Hope that I won't be banned for this!!!!

No, it's actually a "W" reg. I don't know why, but it feels a whole lot better than the 52 reg diesel Focus that I had last year.

I've noticed Foci are variable. I've driven half a dozen or so as hire cars etc., one was brilliant, one was good, a couple were OK, but a few were dire.
