Hi All,
New to the forum. Previously had a 205 GRD (N/A), currently have a 405 GTX TD and have just put a deposit on a 406 110HDI LX estate.
Seems a good improvement on the dated 405. I am looking forward to learning about the car and picking your collective brains on the various troubles she may throw up.
She seem mechanically fine. 162,000miles. Apparently benefitting of a timing belt at 120,000 and the last service was 150,000miles with clutch and front pads.
The temperature reading just has three dashes - faulty probe?
The paint is poor. As the 205 and 405 went, the clearcoat has decided to disappear leaving matt paint behind on several panels.
Anyhow, the price seems fine for a 2000 'W' car with a 1 yr MOT - £800. I will drop the oil quickly. How does one reset the indicator and what is the spec of oil. My previous diesels have needed oil changes every 5-6000miles but I understand the HDIs are content with longer intervals?
The alternator looked newish.
I'll get her home, clean her up and see what we have.
I will report further!
In the meantime, any tips/advice appreciated...

Re: Deposit paid..
Hello & Welcome, Edward
By the temperature display, I assume you mean external temp? this is almost always the sensor in the passenger mirror - about £18 for a replacement IIRC.
You reset the service indictor by pressing / holding the trip reset button as you turn on the ignition. HDi's have 12,500 mile service intervals, (though you might notice it getting a bit 'tappety' beyond 10,000).
There are a few opinions on cambelts, but the lowest is 72,000 miles. Clutch / DMF flywheel is the only really expensive common failure, though mant seem to manage 200,000 plus on the original.
Hope you enjoy your new car & the site.

Re: Deposit paid..
Hi!
Check the rear lower engine mounting - this is a very common failure and can get very costly if left alone.
Also listen out for the in-tank fuel pump when you switch the ignition on - if it sounds grumbly then it'll need replacing soon although I expect with your 205/405 ownership you're not shy of a few spanners etc.
To be fair it is not that normal for the paint finish to go on a 406 in fact it's one of its positives I think.
You got the car for the right sort of money so hopefully it'll see you right.

Re: Deposit paid..
Thanks so far, top tips.
So it sounds like I should be able to get the external temp back with a new probe. Perhaps the mirror has taken a knock?
I suspect I am only going to get one key, so may look into sourcing another in due course.
I am used to putting cheapo turbo-diesel oil into the past cars but I am reading that I need to start buying semi-synth - Which cheap makes are good? I do not fancy buying the gucci stuff regularly, even if I decide to extend the service interval to 10000miles.
Thanks again,
Kind regards,
Ed

Re: Deposit paid..
Comma Oil seems good quality and well priced.
Semi Synthetic stays in grade longer and suits the HDi well, if you ran one on cheap Mineral oil you may find problems later with the hydraulic lifters and the oil supply to the turbo may suffer. Everyone on here uses 10w/40 semi-syn with no problems.
With the oil changes we all tend to agree that there is no particular merit in changing oil any more than once a year or 12,000 miles. Engine oil is very good now but if you had really hard use like towing a lot or constant idling as a taxi running around town then it's nice to do it every 6 months or 6000 miles for good measure.

10w/40 and 12,000miles - that will do for me.
Just spoken to the garage - a few issues for the new MOT - suits me fine as saves me the trouble/cost - mentioned CV boots and something else.
Kind regards,
Ed

Spoke to the dealer today - luckily for me it failed the MOT and he claims to be now spending £230 on the following: CV boots, 1xball joint, some bushes underneath and a seatbelt.
Should be collecting on Friday/SAturday.
Glad I insisted on the MOT now.

Sounds bizarre, but that's great news
Hell, imagine if the seatbelt wasn't checked out, and you needed to use it all of a sudden

Re: Deposit paid..
Picking her up tomorrow morning. If she survives the journey home, I'll be doing oil, air, pollen filters on Sunday.
I bought the oil - opted for Mobil super 2000 10w-40 . I have been happy with Mobil 1 in the past and although I was sold on Castrol magnatec when I saw the deal I plumped for the Mobil. Castrol was 26.99 for an inconvienient 4Lt pot whilst the Mobil was 25.99 for 5Lts.
Also Halfords and other sites seem to recommend 5w-40 fully synth but thought I would follow the forum and do 10w-40.
Picking up new sump plug, oil filter ad air from Peugeot dealer at £29.95. Fecking expensive but should be once a year and the saving on running my wifes car should mae it all worthwhile!
Kind regards,
Ed

Re: Deposit paid..
Went to collect the car on Saturday.
Transpires that after its MOT, they parked it at the front of the garage - VOSA saunter past, see it as un-taxed (dealer forgot to add tradeplates) and clamped it. Paperwork for release completed they said it should be free by 1100hrs but it was not and of course the clamping firms offices shut at 1200hrs.
So a wasted journey but to be fair to them they said they would deliver the car Monday evening - 120mile roundtrip in rush-hour!
To my utter amazement, the car turned up.
Got to work immediately by dropping the oil, changing the air and oil filter and adding a bottle of comma Diesel magic that everyone raves about.
The old oil was the classic black mank so it was nice to get that out. Reset the service timer as per forum instructions - Thanks.
The service was one of the easiest I have ever done as the air filter is easy to get to, the oil filter was done up properly, i.e. hand tight with oiled seal and the sump plug was almost hand tight too - they were lucky as it needed virtually no effort to remove!
New plug on, new filters and 4.5lts of Mobil 10W40 Super 2000.
Already sounds smoother and quieter. Very satisfying.
Took her out for a long run today. She averaged 62.8mpg and at one point the potential range was 1,150 miles so I see 1000mile range as achieveable.
Everything seems to work as advertised and I am very happy.
Tyre pressures were way out but I have got that sorted.
Although the paint work is in a hideous condition, I plan to clay what I can tomorrow, Ultimate compound the bits with lacquer and NXT wax the lot by machine polisher. She is a utilitarian vehicle but a good coat of wax cannot fail to help.
I hope the fuel consumption is a sign of a healthy engine. Recent new parts seem to be alternator, battery, clutch and the odd hose.
What is the damage for a replacement key?
Kind regards and thanks for all the tips/advice so far.

mostly on the age of your car, there are several different key types, early HF r/control (with deadlocks), about £78 from the stealers, post 2002 equivalent about £53. Uncut key blade for either about £20. Think others have found them on eBay?
Then you need it programming, for which they'll charge about £50, IF you've got the card with the PIN no. that came with the car.....
There are cheaper options, (I've got a dealer-style diagnostic setup & can programme them, so can one or two others). Know of a site where you can get the PIN no. FOC if you post the VIN
