How do
Afternoon Guys,
I'm going to be getting a pretty nice 406 1.9 TDI on a R plate, hopefully by the end of next week. I was just wondering if there is anything specific that I need to check for apart from the usual(ie mayo in the oil, gunk in the coolant, sitting even, no blue smoke on start etc etc), any help (or if this is like the last forum i joined abuse) will be welcomed or completely ignored.
Also so I can start on saving for them are there any mods that can be done to improve the cars handeling and are tuning boxes worth it?
Dave

Re: How do
Hi Dave & Welcome
help & abuse are readily available via the forum - for the latter, just find a tender nerve & give it a good tweak.
(from your perspective, trashing common rail diesels for being complicated / unreliable is good starting gambit).
Some of the others will be better placed to advise you on mods, but strut braces and general lowering seem popular with the 'younger generation'. You won't get a tuning box to suit your car, but other, cheaper tweaks are possible.

Re: How do
Welcome along!
No abuse here (until you're a regular, but then it's just banter-like piss-taking; we're a relaxed bunch!)
The 406 is a great car; comfortable, reliable, and economical, but as you know it'll have it's gremlins too. Electrical issues are the most common, so it's best you make sure everything electrical works during your test drive.
However, most electrical faults on the 406 are typically caused by some kind of water ingress; you need to ensure that there's no sign of water damage on the car (check the carpets for dampness, especially in the drivers' footwell as there's some critical wiring under the carpet there). Check there's no water getting into the tail lights, and check that the spare wheel well isn't a swimming pool.
Checking for rust is also a good idea - a well-kept 406 typically won't have any rust (my old 1999 Saloon hasn't got any signs of rust, and my new 2002 Coupe hasn't got any blemishes either).
In terms of performance upgrades:
- As your prospective buy is a diesel, you can get your car remapped for more power/higher torque, and this may also provide better fuel economy. This is widely considered to be the most effective way of increasing the engine's output.
A nice ITG panel air filter element and a stainless steel Powerflow exhaust system will also help a bit. I can vouch for the Powerflow exhaust; my saloon was definitely smoother and a bit livelier as a result (and I didn't even ask them for a performance exhaust either) - and the exhaust note is definitely improved.
Probably the cheapest upgrade for handling is a strut brace, which is basically a big metal bar that you fit over the front suspension mounts. In addition to this, there are many after-market springs/shocks which you can use to tighten up the suspension and lower the car.

Re: How do
Welcome on in Dave!
I think the other chaps have got you pretty well covered, also check for play in the back wheels; this will be the top link. Also antirollbar drop links front and rear & the ARB bushes are common failure points. Not forgetting the handbrake and top & bottom engine mounts! There's plenty of info on here, we try to be a helpful bunch

Re: How do
Has anyone mentioned the radiator's made of swiss cheese yet?
Clutch might feel stiff but changing the cable sorts that.
There's not much to tell really just make sure it heats up and stays steady, look at the oil and water, listen for knocks, check all the gears......

Re: How do
By Strut brace I take your just meaning a top brace and not a lower brace aswell? The reason I'm asking is that the car is going for £700 and I'm possibly trading in my sax-slow for it so should be around £500. If thats the case then i'm hoping to try and enter it into PPC's 999 Challenge (google it).
With regards the rad I know they can be an issue as the one on my saxo disintergrated while I was on Holiday in Wales this year then the one on the missus sister's 106 threw in the towel a matter of weeks after.
Cheers for all the advise guys and when I get the car i'll try and post a few pics up and then you might even get to see some of my home-brewed intake fabing(A Wicks speacial) along with various other scrapyard upgrades being bodged in the process!
