Hi - new to forum

Post by RN55ONE »

Hi All,

I am new to forum and are considering buying a 406 to run it on Veg Oil.

I do have a few questions that I would be grateful if could be answered:
1) Which is the best Diesel engine for the job?
2) Which trim level has the most amount of equipment? (I am guessing executive)?
3) How do I know if it has a Bosch pump? Was it introduced in a particular year?
4) Which year of 406 is it best to go for? (e.g. after the manufacturer made significant revisions/enhancements)?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum mate! :)

1. You won't get an HDi to run on veg, the 1.9 standard diesel seems to be the most popular choice; I don't know about the 2.1.
2. As you say executive is the highest spec although in the later models there was an SE spec.
3. No experience of this I'm afraid little short of having a look at the pump!
4. '98 was the approximate switchover year to the new phase

OK cheers,

I'll post an add in the Wanted section for either a 1.9TD or 2.1TD.

The 2.1 runs on the Lucas EPIC fuel delivery system, which is not as good as the Bosch system that supplied fuel to the 1.9. Apparently it is possible to convert a 2.1 from Lucas to Bosch, but I have no experience of this at all.

The unmodified 2.1 is not able to run on vegetable oil because the fuel is denser than standard diesel and the Lucas fuel pump is not strong enough to deliver the fuel. Damage can ensue.

The HDi engines can't take veg oil again due to fuel density; the HDi engines are common-rail diesel and are fuel-injected at very high pressure (several hundred bar); this system is designed and calibrated to work using fluid the same density as diesel, so introducing veg oil can cause Bad Things(TM) to happen.

The D8 to D9 transition occurred during 1999 (T-reg and V-reg were the first to receive the cosmetic facelift), but the HDi 110 engine was introduced during 1998 (Plod's 1998 D8, for example, is HDi-powered). Not sure if the HDi 90 was introduced during 1998 or if that came in later.

Ideal car for running veg oil would be a 1.9TD Executive, or (if you fancy trying it) a 2.1TD Executive. Just make sure whichever car you pick is free of rust and the interior is dry (no water ingress) and you should be OK.

Thanks.

But does the 1.9TD come in the facelift/D9 version?
Or did the switchover come as the engines went from TD to HDi?

The facelift (D9) version came after the transition from TD to HDi. From what I understand, no D9 was ever fitted with a TD engine; they're all petrols or HDis.

Pre-facelift (D8) cars started getting HDi engines during 1998-1999, and then the D8-to-D9 transition occurred during 1999.

In theory, you could take an early D9 with a buggered engine and drop in a 1.9TD - but there's a lot of work involved there; you need the engine, gearbox, wiring looms, fuel pump, etc. In my book, that'd be cost-prohibitive; better just to buy a D9 HDi and use pump diesel. The fuel is pricey, but the engines are economical - you're looking at between 40 and 55 MPG depending on the type of journeys you do and the weight of your right foot.

Hi & welcome to the forum 8)

As previously stated the only engine that will run SVO or WVO straight out the box is a 1.9TD, all of which, in 406 form, have Bosch pumps.

Top trim is executive, but you only seem to be able to get a saloon 1.9 TD exec, a GLX is the 'poshest' estate I've ever seen.

My bro runs his 1.9Td on a high % of WVO in warm weather, with no issues beyond the usual initial filter changes.

1.9TD's frequently manage well over 200k on the original engine & unless you're unlucky, 406's don't rust much.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Sorry, no - the HDi engine uses a common rail design for fuel delivery, meaning that the fuel is injected into the engine at very high pressure. The fuel it delivers must therefore behave in the same way as regular diesel in the way it combusts, the viscosity, etc. Veg Oil (waste or otherwise) is not good in the HDi engine.

You can run an older 1.9 TD (the XUD lump found in 406s from 1996 to 1998/1999) on veg oil without modification. You can also convert the 2.1 TD to run on veg oil; this involves replacing the Lucas EPIC fuel pump with the Bosch fuel pump found on the 1.9 TD.

As far as I know, it is not possible to convert an HDi engine to use veg oil.

What I do is fill the HDi with Shell diesel, then either put the SVO in my deep fat frier or use the WVO already in there. I then use the SVO/WVO to turn raw potato chunks into chips. After consuming the aforementioned chips along with a suitable quantity of cooked red meat or battered fish (also SVO/WVO fried) , I find the drive is a lot better, although often subject to unpleasant odours due to excess gaseous output from the rear

I have eaten a deep-fried Mars bar, and am not keen. Far, far too sweet-tasting, and even if I didn't already know it was almost lethally bad for me, I would guess it purely as a result of eating it.

And in all the times I've ever gone into a chip shop either before or since, I don't believe any of the other customers have ever ordered one while I've been there, so it's hardly a national dish or even a mildly-popular snack food.

The bottom line: I would not recommend eating one.
