Peugeot newbie from Portugal

Hello everyone

Been a bit of a lurker so far, but I figured I should properly introduce myself and maybe even 'participate' a bit.

I've had the keys of a Y2000 406 Estate for a couple months now and, so far, seems to be a pretty solid lady. It's a 'Monaco Blue' 2.0 HDI with 110 bhp, in 'Executive' trim, now with about 225k miles on the clock, and it was a bit of a 'barn find' which I managed to get for about half the average market price out here. Altogether, a really nice deal

Having always driven 'smaller' cars, with the only exception being an Astra estate hire car, it's been nothing short of 'daunting' to drive such a massive vehicle!

But, the all-leather interior and climate control make it 'supremely' comfortable, and apart from a few (hopefully) minor mechanical issues, I'm sure it'll be a comfortable and solid companion for many more miles.

As requested, here are some rushed pics from my old girl









She's in pretty good condition, I'd say...Apart from a few 'old-age' gremlins, due to having been garaged for a long time.

I notice the old HDI is a little sluggish (engine starts cutting at 3000rpm), the suspension feels tired and squishy, plus the bodywork could use a little polish here and there...

Hopefully I'll be able to sort those out and give my 'blue Valkyrie' a little well-deserved TLC

That looks fantastically clean to me, nice and straight too, especially given the mileage

There's a bit of an art to driving the HDI's, as you note they run out of puff at about 3k (plus higher than that and they start guzzling the juice too) so there's no point going there, use the torque low down, that's what it's for

Thanks! It does look very nice for a 16 year old estate.

The issue with the running out of breath at 3K isn't what's worrying me... Coming from a revvy Italian petrol engine, I figured it could be that I just wasn't used to driving diesel.

But it also feels a a bit sluggish even below that, and other people who have tried it feel the same...Plus, I see other 406s out there dart by at rather brisk pace, and I struggle to get to 60.

I've been asking 'Uncle Google' for advice, and even tried unplugging the maf sensor, but it still feels sluggish all around. Here's hoping it isn't a serious gremlin

If you unplugged the MAF and it didn't feel any different, you need a new MAF sensor! The difference should be extremely noticeable.

I'll try to look into getting a new MAF sensor, see if it works in giving the old girl a new breath

Hi, and a belated welcome from me.

Have a check under the bonnet, on the throttle cable there should be a clip that sits on some ridges and fits up against the black sensor, if it's missing then you will have limited throttle.

Nice looking car, clean and tidy. I think the colour is Rhodes blue though.....

I think the 406 is a brilliant car, probably the best value for money on the secondhand market. I previously drove CXs and XMs so the 406 is actually smaller than my previous cars, I think its just a nice size, not unwieldy but has enough space inside, handles better than the XM but doesn't ride as well - a good all-rounder.
