406 starting prob

Post by yogi44 »

Hi all first post as i am a newbie, i have got the chance of a v reg puegot 406 estate from a friend who wants to offload it,its a nice looking car but it wont start i think he said it was coming up with an electronic ignition fault on the dash.

It turns over fine but will not start, i did notice when i went to view it it opens and locks from the key in the lock but when pressing remote nothing happens.
i was hoping someone on here could help any suggestions guys, please.

Hi Yogi. Could you tell us a bit more about the car, V reg is when they changed and it's rather important, which engine would be a good start.

The remote is probably not related, unless someone's monkeyed with the key as the transponder chip for the immobilizer isn't connected with the remote control for the door locks.

Hi steve_earwig and teamster1975 appreciate the replies.

Steve the vehicle is 406 diesel estate hdi (90) 1997cc on a v reg,so its looking like a d9 it turns over fine but will not start, i notice the keys lock will unlock the vehicle but the key fob doesnt seem to unlock or lock the doors.someone from the forum has said if i hold the big button on iirc while turning on the ignition after 10 secs will reset the vehicle.

the previous owner said it cut out before and it was towed home and she tried it a week later and it started and run for weeks. i was thinking maybe a fuel problem like not getting any, does the estates have the pump in the tank like some of the saloons.i hear they can fail, but again i dont know if its on the d9 or the d8 or is this pump on all 406s.so any suggestions would be great as i am going to have to transport it up from the borders and would much rather get it started and drive it up.

kind regards yogi44

Thanks teamster,

went down to check this car for myself and it has an immobiliser light on a square with a key, is there anyway to bypass the immobiliser to get it driving and then it could be put onto the diagnostics at the local garage.
