Thinking of buying a 406 !

Post by BULDOG »

Hi everyone ,

I'm looking to change my car very soon , currently have a discovery that getting past it's best .
I like the look of the 406 estate , and after driving a couple love the ride compared to my disco.

I've seen an 03 reg 2.0 hdi 110 GLX with all the goodies and service history for sale and the dealer wants £3900 for it
looks like its been looked after but it has done 106,000 miles . Pretty sure he will come down a bit on price

After reading many posts on this site , i just wanted know what you thought of this deal and the model in general.

Any help and opinion would be apreciated

Thanks.

Hello fella!

The mileage is not a problem.

Have a looky at www.Cargiant.... in London they allways have some late 53/04's in all at trade price (well less than other dealers anyway) this will give you an idea. Sounds fair to me, I paid £3295.00 for my exec HDi on a T plate in Jan 06 with 96K on the clock.

Oh and it must have a cambelt change at 96K so check this. Also the bottom pulleys go on these at around 115K but yours will hopefully have thew mofifoied one fitted at the factory so no problem - just check it has 3 "slots" in the damper not 2.

Welly.

Thanks for the replys ,

That's the colour of the one i'm looking at ! but i really need an estate for lugging tools about , chucking the dog in , and sleeping in when i cant be bothered to put the tent up !

So 106000 is not a problem , thats good to know . is there anything else apart from cambelt , pully , and checking all the electrics that i need to be looking out for ?

Another question for you , are the reports of 40 / 50 mpg out of these diesel's true , seem's too good to be true .

Went for a blast in a mate's 406 tonight , and i'm pretty much convinced that its a the car for me now .

Yes - a steady journey (even at 90MPH) will see high 40's and 53-ish if you want, sometimes more.

Around town = 37 ish

A/C condensers fail regularly at 7 years old (£300.00).

The most important thing is to buy a nice straight/tidy example with lots of history etc. The 406 makes for quite easy ownership really.

50+ is easy in a hdi on the longer runs, i used to get around 55mpg out of mine pretty much all the time but i hardly did any down driving.

The only other thing to check is the clutch and dual mass flywheel (mine was shot by 140k), fairly expensive job if it needs changing. the signs are bit of clutch judder, squealing on engaging the clutch and clutch slipping at high speeds. the best test it to take down a dual carriage way at about 55/60, then plant your right foot to the floor and see if there's any clutch slip.
