Hey there from Notts

Post by Devilsypug »

Hey peeps,
Just joined the site, looks good so far. I have recently bought a clean silver 1999 'S' reg 406 manual 2.0 16v GLX Estate for the princely sum of £900. This was to replace our beloved 1996 BMW 320i 6 cylinder Touring which sadly went to the great scrapyard in the sky after blowing the head gasket & spewing its guts all over the A38 near Derby last month - apologies to all those caught up in the ensuing tailback while council crews cleaned up! We could not justify the repair costs due to the age of the car. The next car certainly had big boots to fill as our BMW served us faultlessly for 3 years & all the Vectras, Mondeos, old Passats, etc... just bored me to the back teeth. Never even considered Pug 406's until a friend persuaded me to take his 406 2.0 LX Saloon for a drive, how surprised was I???? I then persuaded my partner to check a few out with me & she was impressed by the size (we have 2 dogs, a 9 year old boy & regularly take camping hols or tow a small caravan), plush comfort & levels of equipment offered by the 406. The hunt was on & after a few dogs (limited budget ya know...! ) we finally found the gem mentioned above complete with fantastic climate control which is a first for us, just set temperature, press auto & forget about it! Brilliant. Very pleased with it so far, little down on power compared to the Beemer but quieter, more comfortable & much more economical on a long run.
Confession time.... I am a bit of a petrol head, my other toys include a 2001 Yamaha FZS1000cc Fazer motorcycle & a tidy 1992 Toyota Celica GTi-16. I am looking forward to finding out more about these very understated 406's & welcome all tips & advice on releasing a few extra ponies (purely to aid caravan towing, holiday weight lugging, etc. honest..... ). Also, any towbar tips would be greatly appreciated as this is one thing I need to purchase for the car in order to tow our caravan.
Anyway, enough of the waffle from me & will let you all get back to work as should I....
Look forward to making a few friends on the site. Take care people.

Hi there & welcome :) Cant help with power as diesel is the way :D Instant 30 bhp & all that!
Anyway, towbars.I asume you will have the older style D8.I`ve fitted 2 towbars to the later D9 estates. The first was a 2000,the second was my car when my dad got it new in 2003.The towbar is easy to fit as the mounting holes are already there in the chassis.Your car will be the "normal" wiring, which will be easy to wire up,the same as the 2000 yr 406 we did.Mine has multyplex wiring whih means a few relays etc,& a little bit more time.
The cheapest place for towbars is Towsure.Thats if your going for a new one.If not,a look on their web site will tell you if its the same towbar for all 406 estates, then you can pick up a second hand `bar.

Welcome mate, You've listened very well to your friends idea of trying a 406, i can tell you you've chosen a great car there. Having had a vast range of Peugeots and know quite a bit about them, i had a mint condition 106 Escapade in Diablo Red, but needed something slightly bigger so i was on the look out for either a 406 Coupe or Saloon, and my current one (d8 406 Saloon came up for sale, quite cheaply and i proudly paid the money and have not looked back, it is a excellent car allround being very comfortable and surprisingly economical for such a big car (getting 38-40 mpg) which is a top of my list requirements. But again, you have purchased a awesome car there mate, Did you get any Service History with it? One thing i would change if it hasnt been done is the cambelt & for certainly get the waterpump changed. 8)

Yes I did get some service history with it but not a full one. Pug stealership stamped up to 78,000 miles, old MOTs and a few reciepts mainly for tyres, service kits, etc... It had new front springs, new CV joints both sides & a full exhaust system including the CAT for it's MOT a week before I got it. As far as I can see the cambelt was last done at 98,000 miles, the car has now done 110,000. Should I be worried??? :? No sign of any waterpump reciepts.
