Hi All,

Just bought a 1996 406 3.0L V6 with 67000 miles on the clock. It's a lovely car, the GLX model with full electric heated leather interior, rain sensing wipers, climate control et al. I do have a couple of questions though about some niggly things which I'm hoping you on the forum could help me with! I'll post some photos first...

It drives fantastically and is sooo smooth! And has a nice surprise when you stick the boot in!

The problems? Well firstly there is a little fan in the light console that buzzes constantly (I'm assuming it's used for the A/C) but for the life of me, I can't get the console down! It's feels like everything is brittle and I don't want to break something. I'm sure there is a proper way?

Image

My immobiliser keypad won't stay up, the lugs are worn and don't hold it there anymore. Is this a common thing and can it be fixed?

Image

There is a keyhole in the boot, I'm scuppered if I know what it does!

That's it really, as I said it's a lovely car and I really enjoy driving it. I hope to become an active member on this forum, posting up repairs and improvements I make as I go. I'd appreciate any help you guys with your vast knowledge can offer!

Thanks,

Scott

Hello Scott & Welcome 8)

Nice looking car you have there.
Can't help you much with your questions, but there's certainly a few people on here knowledgable about similar models - someone will be along soon....
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Bad news I'm afraid, the screw holding it all up is behind the courtesy light, and you have the early version which you probably won't get out without breaking it. You need to lever it out from the centre of the side opposite the switch.

They revised the light design in 1998 (the shape of the switch is the giveaway) to one that comes out cleanly, but the connector changed too, so it's not a straight swap
My immobiliser keypad won't stay up, the lugs are worn and don't hold it there anymore. Is this a common thing and can it be fixed?
No it's not common. Looks like someone's caught it :( You may be able to get a replacement panel off ebay. If your car is setup to work without having to enter the code, you can replace the panel with one with a little cubby hole, but keep the keypad for emergencies

It kills the alarm.
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Thanks for the info! Not really ideal though! I need to replace the aerial too. I think I'll just buy a replacement light and remove the old one and just replace it! I don't know if the car can be run without the code, but I'd rather keep the keypad. I'll just strip it off and see what I can do!

Cheers!

Looks very tidy, especially with the low mileage.

I don't think I've ever seen grey leathers before? :?

Welcome btw.

Thank you Welly. I can't say I've ever recalled seeing a grey leathered Peugeot either before but it suits it well with the Blue carpets and exterior!

I'm just wanting the good weather to come in again so I can wash it and have it stay clean for more than a day! There's far too much salt on the roads up here atm. And where they've run out of salt, they've put down red blaze. Stuff gets everywhere and there is no escaping it!

Welcome on in Rammstein! :)
Very tidy car, is it just the plastic on the keypad housing that's worn? You could always swap the guts over to another unit.
I think there's a "HowTo" in the knowledge base on cleaning the climate control sampling fan, as mjb says the plastic can be very brittle on the lens!

Cheers dude! Yeah, the little pins have worn down on the keypad, making it "sag".

I'll have a look in the "How To" section, thanks for the info!

Funnily enough it came up in another thread earlier, here's the link :)

NIce one! I took it down today, of course breaking the light in the process(!) The fan is so fiddly and no matter how many times I repositoned it, it started to rattle. So I carefully filed the edges of the blades down and now it's quiet as a mouse! I'm going to change my aerial whilst everything is down because it's on it's last legs and order a new light tomorrow. If the weather holds out, I'll be changing the plugs because they are definately due. I'll take some photos of how I did it and post them up!
