I'd Like to say Hello.

Post by LostBloke »

I'm very glad to find this site, and would like to say 'hello'.

I've just bought my first 406 and am pleased with it.

I have two questions at the moment, the first will make me look a right idiot, but here goes:- the car drives very well, but crawling through Bristol the other day the temperature climbed. When I stopped and looked, to my great surprise, there was no radiator fan or housing. (What a Twit I must look). Can someone please tell me what sort I need to get as I see there are single and double fan systems. Question 2: where is the best place (cheapest ;) ) to buy a new external temperature sensor?

Anyhow, thanks for reading this and I'll try not to be too much trouble.

Regards

Hello & welcome 8)

Scrappy's got to be your best bet for the rad fan(s) etc. With a bit of luck someone with a similar spec car will tell you.

External temp sensor is reasonably cheap from Peugeot & I think most people would think a 2nd hand one a false economy - you ought to be able to search for 'external temperature' or similar on here.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Welcome in fella! :)
Post up some more info on the car model, aircon or not. You can have either one or two fans depending on whether it has aircon. Definitely go to a scrappy!
Replacement external temp sensor from the stealer, £15 I remember someone saying? I need to replace mine as well, the temperature was 28c today apparently

Thanks for all the rapid responses. Very impressive.

@ steve_earwig , Thanks I'll post the chassis number a bit later (It's raining at the moment).

@teamster1975 , I put my cars details in the signiture, and, according to my car it was 45c yesterday, which was a good excuse to go for a pint. :D

Should be a double fan setup I would have thought, the aircon can't be working very well!
45c eh? That calls for a pub crawl! :cheesy:

@ steve_earwig,
Tis done, the number is VF38BRFVTxxxxxxxx, and, after a quick call to the local dealer it should have a single fan, is this correct?
BTW, the dealer wants £205.63 for it and a peugeot scrap yard wants £35, I wonder which I shall choose?

If it's a 2l petrol with aircon I would have thought it'd be a two fan setup :?

Yes, I'd have thought so, but what do I know - I missed that the bl***y thing wasn't there.

Does anyone have a handbook for this car? I'm happy to buy one, or if someone could scan a copy and send it to me I would be very greatful.

When Steve checks back he can put your VIN into service box and see what it should have had.

Applelogies, my back was hurting so I had a kip

Hold on, XU10J4R, automatic...

BODY COLOUR PAINT - WICKED RED

Well wicked! :cheesy:

Service Box says twin fan :frown:
Gate http://www.peugeotpartscatalogue.co.uk/D8F/1/12C11A.HTM
Ecia http://www.peugeotpartscatalogue.co.uk/D8F/1/12C12A.HTM

Looks like most of it is common to the 1.8 16v, 2.0 16v incl. coupe and the 1.9td, apart from cars without air con don't have the little Bitron control box (#12). There also seems to be a different part number for this for yours, 1338a2 on service box even though you have an AL4 but I think you need to take what you can get and worry about the finer points later. Oh, and Service Box died

It's a shame you never spotted it but it's not something very obvious like forgetting to check it has a spare

steve_earwig, Sorry about your bad back, I hope it's better.

Thanks for all the info., I must admit I am pretty lost after '.....twin fan'. I think a 'phone call to the scrappy tomorrow and ask if I can go and compare what will fit my motor. Can you tell which sort to fit by looking at where it's supposed to go? If so, I'll take some pictures and post them.

I suppose, at worst, I can get any-old fan stick it onto the radiator with Duck Tape and run a cable to a switch in the cab. *Joke*

Cheers, a few hours on a heat pad and it seems ok now. This is just the bad back I had from when I was a kid, working bent over for a few hours gives me a pain behind my shoulder blades I can't shift. I have exercises but it can be fine for months so I stop doing them and... I have a proper bad back too nowadays but that's been fairly good for a few months.

I reckon you need to compare the diagrams I posted links for to your motor so you get an idea of what's actually missing. I couldn't see any real differences between the two fan set ups, although the fans are a different manufacturer and the shrouds have a different number, but you car could have had either apparently. Hopefully you'll be able to get the whole lot from the breaker's, fans, shroud, the whole kit and caboodle. Btw must be from a D8 (i.e. 1996-early '99).
