Hi all,
Just wanted to say hi. Just recently changed my job and require a slightly more practical vehicle for my daily commute. So come in for something information and always enjoy a good active forum.
So my parent's in law have a nice P reg 406 sitting in there drive way, its currently been used as a bit of a storage bin and has been sitting for the last 5Month or so. Anyway visited today to have a poke around. Its the 2.2(i think) Diesel turbo model. For the most part seems in good order, but the alternator charge light does not go off and from the symptoms sounds like the alternator has died.
So first job's are to get that changed and give the car a good clean up before an MOT.
Just about to get my first pug.

Welcome in mate!
It will be the 2.1 diesel, the alternator is a pretty easy swap out but take a photo of the belt routing before you take it out!

good thinking about that photo idea. Had a quick look under the bonnet, it looked to me a bit of a pain to change the alternator but got the manual to be on the safe side.

Hi & Welcome
As Teamy says, it's most likley a 2.1 - can only be that or a 1.9.
Worth having a quick check for poor connections, dodgy engine earth etc. before shelling out for an alternator.
