Hi, I'm new to the forum having only just agreed to buy a 406, currently we have a '99 VW Passat TDi 110 SE which we've owned for the last 5 yrs and to be honest it's been pretty painfree motoring only requiring regular maintenance, consumables (brake pads, tyres etc) and diesel to keep it chugging along, but it's now approaching 230K and is starting to feel like it!! it needs 2x tyres , a CV joint, a new rad (which is weeping), it will be due another cam belt and it’s recently developed a annoying intermittent fault where it drops onto a ‘limp home’ map for no apparent reason I think this it probably due to a failure of one of the many vac sensors the diagnostics don’t tell me which it is so it’s a matter of changing them one by one tell I find the right one which could get expensive if I don’t drop on the right one straight away.
Anyway this brings me to the 406, a friend of mine as just been offered £500 for his ’99 406 110 HDi saloon in swap for an MPV he’s owned it for the past 6 yrs it’s done 145K and is a straight clean car.
I could quite easily spend nearly that much fixing the VW so I’ve decided to buy his 406 and sell the Passat on (it’s still taxed and tested till sept and diesel VWs for some reason seem to fetch decent money regardless of age and mileage).
The 406 isn’t without its issues requiring rear anti roll bar bushes and a non working N/S elec window looking at both of which should be simple fixes, other than that it appears fault free.
It will be interesting to see how the Pug compares to the VW which as been an excellent servant over the years, hopefully the 406 will provide similar trouble free service.
