Hello forum

Post by martinst »

Hello all,

I thought it only polite to introduce myself to the board, and apologise for doing so AFTER I posted a question on the 'Electrical System Talk' sub board.

I have owned 2 pugs, a 1996 406 2.0 Turbo exec (from 1997 -2002) and my present 2002 406 V6 saloon from late 2002. The V6 was one of the last to be imported into the UK and has the marvellous 210BHP V6 lump, satnav, aircon, esr, and all the trimmings. The engine is by far the cars best feature, although it did eat coils during the first 5 years!

The only gripe I have (and still have) with the car are the standard brakes, which frankly, are rubbish. Why Peugeot chose not to fit the Brembos from the 406 V6 coupe is beyond my comprehension, but they didn't. The EBC discs and pads I have on the car now are pretty good, but as one fellow V6 owner said to me, 'you have to drive PREDICTIVELY'. This is very true, otherwise there is every chance you will rear-end someone, which I did some years ago, resulting in a rather hefty bill! I hope to fit Brembo discs, pads and new wheels to the car next year (funds permitting) which should finally give this car the braking performance the superb engine deserves.

All the best,
Martin

Hi Martin & welocme to the forum 8)

FWIW, I agree the std brakes are a bit 'marginal'. :frown:
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Welcome to the forum :) A lot of people complain about the Brembo brakes on the V6 Coupe because of the expense and the brake squeal or the constant attention needed to negate the squeal.

I've never had a car with factory brakes that could take 'spirited' driving and always left you backing away with front discs hotter than the sun

You need a large swept area of disc and good venting, simples.

You'd need wheels which'll clear the callipers when you get round to it (guess you know that though). It will be quite an expensive conversion but well worth it, maybe you could collect all the parts over time to ease the cost?

Did the coupe's have standard 406 rears? just thinking that more braking effort will go to the front with brembo's leaving the rear a bit out of sync?

The coupés do indeed use the standard calliper on the back, they're pressure regulated and under-worked on my estate so they're probably good enough (shame about the handbrake though  )

I always thought my rear discs were used fairly well as they always ran really clean, not glazed or discoloured or with any 'lazy patches'.

I know some cars get a bit squirmy at the back end under firm braking when most of the effort is going to the fronts.

Maybe it's my granpa-esque driving style but I'm sure if the disks were used a lot they wouldn't go rusty :?

Just a thought - it might be worth checking to see if there's any difference in the master cylinder.
