Rattle on hard acceleration
Hi everyone. I recently bought a 2000 406 glx hdi (110) estate which is fab and I am very happy (especially the cave that is the boot). My only query is that there is a rattle from the engine underhard acceleration. If I accelerate very gradually it doesn't happen but the minute you floor the pedal you get this rattle that will dissapear at the top end of the revs but tends to be audible most in the 3000 revs range. Does anyone have any suggestions please as I am loathed to go straight to a garage as they will have a field day with me saying "I have a noise" !! hope you can put some suggestions my way. Thanks

Hi & welcome to the site.
Sounds like the all-too-common injector rattle problem. If so, not serious. Try having a search for rattle or noise posts

HI mate and welcome in,
Another thing to try is revving the engine up with the bonnet open just to eliminate rattles caused by excessive engine movement making trim and other bits rattle.
If it will rattle with no load on the engine you may at least be able to get a general area the noise is coming from.
You could try this with the engine under load but I don't think strapping yourself to the front of the car is particularly safe

Re: Rattle on hard acceleration
This is one of those "they all do that" things.......
It's a sort of clattery sound as you accelerate, this then disappears just above 3000 revs (when the third piston of the HP pump kicks in and delivers more fuel) I think it's characteristic of a lean-running modern diesel but then some say this noise does worsen as the car ages
I wouldn't worry unless you've got smoke, poor mpg, performance etc...
