Re: I never expected this!
Well, thank you all for the welcomes. And now it's all over. At the beginning of May I picked up the replacement, a 1999 Chevy Blazer 4x4 (got one in your SUV collection, Alberto? ) which is much easier for my wife to get in and out of. On the same day (Bank Holiday Sunday) I picked up a 1986 Nissan Cherry 1.3 for daily use, and delivered the 406 to its delighted new owner. I've spoken to him since and he's very happy with it.
Alberto, there are pics of my models on Fotki.com (I'm under the same username) and there may also be some on Photobucket (same name again), but at the moment I don't seem to be able to link from either, so just go and have a look. Good hunting! Or, as you're not that far away, come up to Barrow and say hello! I have heard of Barry Potter Fairs, in fact it was one of his I went to last: December 30th at the Reebok. I was disappointed. Bargains were thin on the ground. Living in another country for nearly four years, toy fairs are something I really missed, but on that experience, I have to question why. I still came away with a few careful purchases though, the buying instinct was too strong.....

Re: I never expected this!
Well if you're offering a 55 Chevy I'll definitely be back! Seriously? I was very happy with my 406 (as is the new owner, and rightly so) but for physical reasons it wasn't suitable for regular use as our main (indeed only) car. With the purchase of a big 4x4 for wife-carrying duties I couldn't justify running a 2.0 just for going four miles to work, hence the purchase of a 1.3 litre Nissan. Whatever I bought would have spelled the end for the 406; had I bought (say) a 2.0 Picasso, I would have run that as my daily and not bought a shopping-trolley hatchback.
I suppose it is possible that I might have a 406 another day. I can't see it being the same one, and I can't see it happening in my current circumstances, but I wouldn't rule it out. I liked it enough to be able to say that. This one was very much an emergency purchase, so if I was in a better position to choose, I'd make sure the one I bought was an automatic. And probably a V6 estate. In green or red. With a towbar. Not like I'm fussy or owt...
I've said many times that the 06 generation is the last generation of good-looking Peugeots; later models seem to me to have lost all sense of style, although I do think the mid-run 06 facelifts were unusually successful. They so often aren't.
