2.2 HDi The Next Generation

Post by rwb »

I bought this  (Still can't quite believe all the expense and hassle I've caused myself -- it's quite out of character. )

Pick it up on Saturday. Originally advertised at £4700 when I test-drove it, and nearly sold over the weekend. It will have it's original registration number on (07).
I looked at cheaper ones but they were either tatty or the inferior Sport spec. It's still dear compared to the 2.0, but I've spent so long being sensible that I just have to do something for me and bugger the consequences. So this is it.

This is not a sensible car. It's more to tax, burns more fuel, is much more complicated, and is a bit challenging on the eye. The only sensible thing to do is keep the 406.

I expect the 406 to be the best car I will ever own, and it's looked after me far better than I've looked after it.
However, after 8 fantastic years I have if nothing else to get the fast cars thing and the new cars thing out of my system.
The 406 is going in a garage, and I expect to dig it out in a few years and fall in love with it again with the certainty that the grass is not greener anywhere else.
Oh, but the 6 is still going on the rolling road on 2nd. (Out with a bang if nowt else.)

Not much to report about the 407 yet, only what I found on the test drive: dodgy tyre pressure monitor! 1st to 4th are the same ratios as the 406 110 and 2.2, which are slightly longer than the 90, so that felt odd. 5th is in between, and 6th is much longer, so it was a bit odd. Pulled completely smoothly to 3000 (and no doubt far beyond) which is odd to me since I'm screaming for a gear change at 2500. Peak torque arrives at just 1500rpm, and I think I detected a slight turbo kick :D low down from the small turbo. No way did I see it's potential on the Leeds "ring road", but I did detect some good roundabout potential

So, roll on Saturday...

Extremely pleased for you rwb...
It is very very clear that car has been good to you and you absolutely adore it. I look forward to the day you rediscover your 406, you'll be like a little boy at Christmas... I feel the very same way about my second 205... I have a weak spot for the 205s because of how good my second car was for me...

I wish you the very best of luck on Saturday, can't wait to see the pictures :D

Wow, that was out of the blue - must be something in the air.

Looks like a good purchase at a very reasonable price, and look forward to seeing it at the next meet.

So you've taken the plunge at last, Rich?

Enjoy - looks like a whole lot of fun at a reasonable price.
The 6-speed's a bit odd initially, but you soon get used to it.

I just posted this on the coupe club -- since I've been stalking them for a year now -- and now the site is down. I think I really offended them now :supafrisk:

Nice! I think you'll enjoy that a lot.

One thing I'd make sure of is treat it to 6-monthly oil changes to keep those Turbo's sweet. I think Discopug on here has that engine in his C5 estate? but he's not around so much now.

Ta Welly :)

The standard oil change is 20k  which I find absolutely outrageous.
The 406 was on 6k changes, but I've relaxed that to 12k since disabling the EGR because the oil stays much cleaner.
I will be watching the oil very carefully until it settles down.

Otherwise, it'll want a new set of filters. I think it will want an aux belt and tensioners -- the back of the belt was shiney and something is whirring (not just belt-whir).

When the 406 was 6 years old it had 125k on it, and it had an alternator and the bottom pulley done -- but I think they're mileage rather than age related.

I reckon that would've been cherished what with the private plate and stuff.

Being a nosey barstool I've just tried to find it on AT but it's not there? what I did see was a few 3.0V6 petrol's :o I thought they stopped doing those :?

What's the 2.7V6 HDi like? I don't know much about them but I do like the sound of a multi-cylinder Diesel.
