Hello from Wales

Post by hugh »

Hi everyone in 406OC,

I'm Hugh in Cardiff. I'm borrowing my Dad's 406 at the moment to get back from work on nights, so I thought it might be nice to spruce it up a bit for him.

Off the top of my head it needs the following doing:

* exhaust (booked in Friday)
* central locking doesn't work, as in the car has no security beyond ignition key / immobiliser (have asked garage to have a quick look but not spend ages)
* dash LCD too dim to see
* various bits of trim missing
* half the front bumper missing
* wheel trims missing
* mats a little bit raggedy (will try and find cheap but nice ones - maybe look on eBay for s/h Peugeot ones?)
* courtesy light doesn't work
* remote locks don't work (see above)
* stereo doesn't turn off, or it it does it takes forever to turn it on again
* thorough service.

Will make appropriate posts in the right sub-forums (please forgive any errors).

It must sound a bit rough given the above list, but it's a brilliant car. My Dad told me he bought it for £2,000 about 10 years and 140,000 miles ago, and all he's done since then is pretty much servicing, MOT, tyres and clutch. Until Christmas last year (~190k) it was on the original clutch! My Dad lives in a hilly area, as well. My Dad's driven it to the south of France dozens of times and used to drive it 250 miles every weekend, and it's never let him down (touch wood). I borrowed it before, about 18 months ago, and drove some mates up to Edinburgh to do the marathon. They all commented on what a nice car it was (except one guy who said it didn't have much poke, but he's used to a turbo diesel) and that it had survived the miles, hills and dogs very well. We called it "The Old Campaigner" that weekend.

Look forward to sharing knowledge with you guys.

Regards

Hugh

PS It's called "Trevor" because it's a T reg. When I was a kid, my Dad had an F reg escort which was red, so we called that "Fred."

PPS. My Dad has another car as well. When he bought it he really wanted a 406 HDi Rapier Estate, but his wife persuaded him to get a Fabia as she didn't think she'd be able to get a 406 estate out of their yard.

Hi Hugh, welcome to the club.. :cheesy:

From what I can tell, the list on your Dad's 406 is much the same as most of us here.... :wink: but what flavour is Trevor? /Petrol/Diesel/Estate/GLX etc

Central locking could be a bit tricky, but I see you have started a fresh thread for that - good idea.
Dash LCD, do you mean the display above the stereo? If so there are 3 bulbs inside it which is a piece of cake to do..
Wheel trims? Just respray the steelies a lovely gloss black - 'Fresh :mrgreen: ) looks nice if done properly like.
Mats from the 99p store, Aldi or wherever - just trim to fit.
The courtesy lights could be lock related ( mine worked with the remote locking but NOT with the key in the door..pffft )
Stereo, normally buggered.

Keep plodding away at the list, at least you can work on it during the day when most other people are at work.. :evil:

P.S. What is the Fabia called - we need details ( my money is on Fiona....? )

Kelv.
2003 2.2hdi estate - mine
1998 Volvo 940 auto estate - also mine
2019 Citroen C3 something - the wife's
PP2000 user, can help with faults / diagnostics in the Bournemouth area.

Thanks guys. I don't know if the Fabia has a name. It might be a bit too recent and characterless for that!

Will look into all the suggestions. I really think these are terrific cars. I'd love to have a go on the coupe / V6.

As an aside, I used to marshal at various motorsport events round the nation. The weirdest thing I ever saw was a bloke racing a Montego estate. It was all black and he had a sunstrip saying "The Undertaker." He stopped at my / our post once with a blown radiator, was a nice chap.

Talking of Peugeots, years ago my brother bought a 205 GTi at the beginning of his university holidays. He drove it all summer and sold it in September for £50 more than he paid for it. He said "it's amazing what people will pay if you give the car a wash and a hoover."

Shwmae! It's cool to hear from people in Cymru. I work in a club in St Mary St so last weekend was a bit mental :-)
