Well... a big hello to a new world

We have just got ourselves a 1997 1.8 LX for £210 (bargain) she's a bit tatty (expected for age and price paid) but gob smacked at how smooth and comfy she is.
She has issues but looking forward to sorting these as I think we finally found a car the Mrs likes

thanks for the welcome both,
I have finally got round to driving it myself and have notice some quite shocking knocks bangs and judders from front and rear, looks like I bought a right crock I think
rear wheel rocked 12 to 6 so bought a complete new bearing only to find out it's not that... think its the arm bush maybe, not yet investigated front end yet
and last night it wouldn't start... would catch then sound like only running on 2 and knocking from engine bay then cut out... got it to start by leaving key in pos 3 for a few more seconds than normal... it eventually fired up and ticked over ok.
will put it in for an mot to get a list i thinks

The 406 is an excellent beast, sounds like your rattles and judders could be drop links and top links, good news is they're cheap and straightforward to replace. Have a search on the forum, loads of info about that kind of stuff.

My first 406 was a 1.8 LX saloon and it was a lovely car. In my opinion the mk1 (or D8 as we call it) was a bit more solidly put together that the mk2 (D9), but tended to suffer from annoying little faults. Don't know what's going on with your running issues, is it still playing up or has it been OK over the weekend?

I guess all the rubber bits in the suspension will have perished after 18 years. (Good grief are they really that old )

Hi, welcome to the forum.

The suspension rattles may be nothing more than the anti roll bar drop links, common fault, and the rear suspension movement is probably the tie rod, it has a ball joint one end and a rubber bush the other. Again not to difficult or expensive.
