Back in a 406 after a few years,

Post by Milesh »

Got a 2.2 HDi this time around, never had much do to with HDI's before (Coming from 205's, 306 GTi's & V6 406's) so I'll need to stick my thinking cap on as the old Emission system fault light is on which hopefully will be the Swirl valve as sometime it goes well and others not at all, Bloody cars

Hi, welcome back..!!

The 2.2Hdi is a great engine - and when its 'adjusted' it is as reliable and problem free as a 2.0Hdi - quicker but less economical.

I mustard mitt I am tempted by a 406 V6 estate currently on eBay, but my 2.2Hdi is reliable and economical enough and owes me nothing..... :cheesy:

Try the swirl valve first ( unplug it at the swirl EV between the block and the air box ) and suck on the pipe - it should move backwards and not move or creep forwards until you release vacuum. If you have access to a vacuum pump ( £15 from Amazon if not ) then this will be a great benefit in finding leaks/blockages etc.

Hello! The DW12 is very well understood by the community these days so we should have no problems sorting that AP fault out 8)

Cheers all, getting there as the end of the IRIS valve had broken off and hardly moves when the engine is rev'd with a fair amount of hissing but if that's normal or not I don;t know, good thing is with the butterfly valve moved (Manually) the other way all is good so far, EML has gone out and power is back and MPG has gone up allot

What does the IRIS do, looks like controling some Air flaps

It controls the swirl flaps.
The actuator rod should be in the extended (up) position with the engine stopped or running at > 2100 RPM, (all 8 inlet valves in use).
It should be retracted (down) at tick over, (only 1 inlet valve per cylinder in use).

Your car will run fine with all valves in use all the time, but if you have a hissing noise, it's likely the diaphragm in the actuator is split causing a vacuum leak which will affect how your car behaves. I suggest disconnecting the vacuum pipe from the electro valve and plugging it to eliminate this problem.
