Well, actualy was more a lack of choice lol, the cars within my price range weren´t many, and most of them without mot or without any mainetence evidence, and i did a test drive on this one and it seems to be in good condition well looked after and i went for it... its very pleasent to drive, as a good response and for what i´ve seen is a car that as a solid build and wont give much trouble if you look after the car.

Hi and welcome.. ( I'm just looking through some unread topics... )
The 406 is a great car, you get lots of qualities for very little money - good looks, reliable, decent ride and handling - very underrated motors
You also get a rubbish handbrake, you can't win them all..

Well its been 3 weeks since i bought the car, so far so good, very confertable, economic, i think the only thing wrong with it is the hand brake , wich travels to much and litlle brakes. The mot was actualy to soon to do it so its going next week. Fingers crossed
Re: I just bought a peugeot 406
Strangely enough the handbrake works on my latest one. They are an excellent car, probably the best value for money on the secondhand market and I would go as far as saying that the 2.0. Hdi 8 valve engine is the best diesel ever made. I ran hydropnumatic Citroens for the previous 25 years but was rather dissapointed with the C5 then I drove a 406 and although the ride is not as good the handling is far better, the car is somehow better than it ought to be.

Re: I just bought a peugeot 406
I've been loving my 406 Estate for 5 years now and the times I've had that handbrake played with!
Finally at the last MoT it needed rear discs, pads and a calliper.. No longer rubbish, but drove with a constant rubbing noise. Some grinding and a thorough clean later and thankfully I had a working and quiet HBrake!
Such a relief, it works really well, but difficult to trust after 4.5 years of problems! [emoji15]

I've bought another one since then and the handbrake is not much good on that one either, I reckon it must be down to the shoes used, I don't suppose there will be anything on them to indicate what make they are - unless anyone knows different.

Re: I just bought a peugeot 406
This handbrake thread is getting old,
As long as the cables are free, ie not rusted solid & the shoes & drums are in good condition.
Make sure that it's properly adjusted (jaspers post) & it works just fine.
Mine will hold the car with four people in & a fully loaded caravan

Re: I just bought a peugeot 406
What are the muscles like on you left arm? I replaced everything on my first one and they still managed to break the cable when trying to get enough braking for it to pass the MOT. Even the one that does work requires a hefty pull I certainly wouldn't trust it with a caravan.

Re: I just bought a peugeot 406
Bedding the shoes in makes a huge difference. The French forum recommends driving at about 10mph with the handbrake applied enough to feel a little drag for say 200 yards, letting it cool off fully and repeating a few times. It really does work.
