New member (what have i done??!!)

Post by thumper »

I am the proud owner of a 51 reg estate 2.0hdi 90 estate bought on saturday at an auction. But have i made a wise purchase? I gave it a thorough check today and the list of faults is as follows: Air bag light on, both f/suspension lower ball joint rubber boots split, rear discs paper thin, front discs a littleworn, earth fault on rear lights(one side goes out when brake pressed), both f/anti roll drop links rattle, display panel unreadable, various trim panels inside falling off, aircon not cold. Plus i have no service history so i dont know when the cam belt was changed last. Why did i buy it? Because i have had peugeots before and i love the ride and handling and the wonderful diesel engines. But i am finding the above list of faults a little daunting. Can anyone offer me any kind words of encouragement?

Did you see it first?

Start with the dangerous stuff, e.g. do yu really need air con just now? The cam belt is pretty crucial I'm afraid.

How many miles has it done??

90bhp I bet thats slow, should have got a 110bhp instead. Air Bag Light is prob just a loose connector under the drivers seat.
With those faults if you paid anymore than £1k-£1.5k then you prob been robbed. Unless its a low miler then £2k.

I'm expecting intergallactic mileage with waffer thin mints, sorry, disks.

The airbag light is usually a connector under the seat, unless it's flashing which is probably the ecu.

Start with the cambelt (+ waterpump and liquorice fan belt), then do the brakes and suspension. The earth fault shouldn't be anything drastic. Airbag? Pah, I wish I could get rid of the damn things. I'm thinking the display panel's bulbs have blown, mine had. You might get some of the stuff from breakers but it's probably not worth it for the suspension stuff, someone said recently the balljoints are about £15 (anybody?). Back brakes are generally warped but I don't think they're too dear for new.

I just hope the car's not been abused as well as neglected.

its done 134000 and i paid £1300. One other thing i forgot to mention is that the drivers window doesnt work but the most important things for me to do are the ball joints. According to my newly aquired haynes manual a special tool is needed to undo them from the bottom of the strut. Can I get away with using something else or do i deffo need the tool? And if so are they easy to obtain? (the tool I mean)

Thanks for your help.

134k miles, mines just over that. If it still has its original clutch then that is due to fail (£140 + 10hrs labour, if it has a DMF and that goes aswell add £280 + 1-2hrs labour), Also expect Alternator (£180 + 4 hrs labour) and Bottom Pulley (£140 + 1hrs labour) to go aswell.

The bottom pulley should be changed with the cam belt as a precaution, they have a nasty habbit of falling apart. My D8 2,1 needed a new clutch release bearing at 200,000 km so I had all of it changed (silly not to). The mechanic was jumping up and down because he reckoned it was the original... Alternators are like light bulbs, they go when they feel like it.

As for the ball joint, I thought maybe you needed a splitter so I looked in Haynes - holy sheep, you have to take half the car apart! You'll also need a mahassive torque wrench, all these tools won't be cheap - anyone got any idea how much this costs to get done?

The window's a pain, does it do anything at all?

No idea....

But good news for the thread starter, the 90bhp model doesn´t have the infamous dmf, so fixing the clutch won´t cost THAT much.......

....but it´s gonna cost alright.

Next question- a friend has access to a fault code reader so we slapped it on to find out why the air bag light is on. It came up with 3 faults 2 of which were wiring related which we cleared. 1 wouldnt clear though." 0A01 Driver Module Trigger". Anyone any ideas about what this might be? Please no more scare stories about clutches and alternators, i'm nervous enough as it is.

RE the front drop link bars-dont bother trying to undo them as they usually rust solid, use a nut splitter or a mini-grinder to get them off.

that fault code means the airbags have been triggerd, you can try and new module, it should fix it, but i wouldnt be supprised if you need to replace all the airbags aswell
