Sounds like it needs a reset.

my brother in law tested all 4 switches and the drivers switch isn't, at least the window wont operate. I have noticed the window has dropped slightly which suggests it may be something else. I'm no expert on these things (clearly), the thing is i don't want to spend a load of money getting a new motor if it isn't that. Have just spent a fortune under the bonnet. do these windows often go wrong on these

Well as Steve says you could try a BSI reset (loads of posts in electical forum)
So you say your brother in law put a meter across the switches and the drivers one didn't work?

Yeah but he's no expert. Bit odd that only one button isn't working though. I would have blamed the window motor first but he seemed to think the button/switch was at fault. Will try what you suggested.

Many thnaks

Well as long as he had the meter set to ohms! :P
I had to replace the same switch on mine, I tested by putting a jumper wire between the leads in the plug (Get a haynes!) Mind you mine is a D8 (no Bsi) so the swich connects directly to the motor.
Breakers yard or ebay is your best bet if you do need a replacement.
