NEW MEMBER WITH A QUERY

Post by dave773 »

Hi, everybody,

My name's Dave and I've just joined your forum. I bought my 51 reg 2.0 GTX auto estate 6 months ago. I think I got a good deal as it had only done 48,000 miles, is in excellent condition and cost me £2,800 plus my 94 Rover 416 Tourer in part-ex.

Apart from a recurrent niggle of the Engine Diagnostic light coming on and staying on every time I fill the tank with petrol, I've had no problems apart from the one I'm going to ask your advice on now.

I've recently noticed that when the lights turn on (either automatically or via the stalk switch), the stop lights come on as well, both the main ones and the bar at the top of the tailgate. When I press the brake pedal, they come on a bit brighter. I'd initially assumed that this was due to a badly adjusted switch on the pedal, but it doesn't happen when the main lights are off.

Any ideas what could be causing this please, as it means that at night I'm driving with my stop lights permanently on! Not a good condition to be in.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, many thanks.

Regards,

Dave

Hiya Dave and welcome :D

A mate had something similar and it turned out to be a faulty stop/tail bulb that was making a circuit between the brakes and sidelights, so I'd check that to begin with.

I'm sure more ideas will be along soon.

Thanks very much for the tip, Dai, you were dead right!

I took out the offside stoplight bulb and one of the stanchions for the stoplight filament had collapsed and was touching the rear light stanchion! Mystery solved! :cheesy:

Just off out to buy a replacement now ..... thanks again.

Thanks for your reply also, teamster. Excuse my naivety but what's the bsi?

Best regards,

Dave

Hi Dave, welcome aboard :cheesy:

Ah, but do the sidelights come on when you brake? That does sound like a short, as Dai suggests, the stop & tails sound like a good place to start, as well as the conectors to the tail lights. If it has/had a tow hitch check out the electrics there too. Another possible is dampness under the diver's side carpet, Peugeot have seen fit to put a mass of connectors there and they're a common problem, might fit in with your tank full warning light too.

Sorry Wiggy, that seems a bit disjointed now doesn't it? Dave had already responded but his post was waiting approval.
