Hi,
Just registered on the site,
Currently looking at changing cars and a 406 is one of my options, been looking at either the 406 sri turbo or the 3.0v6 coupe, but not quite decided yet.
Just out of interest is there a post/sticky or similar that tells of things to look out for when buying one?

Re: Hello Everyone
I'd take an Exec turbo over an SRi - the exec interior won't make you want to puke
Also, you have to realise that the 2.0T is NOT a snarling turbocharged beast like Jap cars - you should think of it as a very relaxed diesel (it runs out of puff at 4200rpm!) which can be driven fairly hard when the mood takes you. It does however have worse fuel economy than the V6
Coupe's are 2-3x the price of a saloon/estate body, but they look good. The coupe is only slightly more impractical than the saloon - both have about the same luggage space with+without the back seats down, the saloon obviously has back doors but the coupe's front seats slide forwards enough to make access easy. One thing to be aware of though is that the coupe doors are LONG! You need to be acutely aware of where you're parking otherwise you'll struggle to get in+out of the car. Also, coupe-specific parts (panels, brake parts, etc) are less readily available and more expensive than their non-coupe counterparts
Don't rule out the estate. I'd take one over a saloon any day, and I don't know if my next car will be another v6 coupe, or a v6 estate
(I've owned a turbo exec estate, turbo exec saloon, v6 saloon and v6 coupe)
Have a look around the forum - there's a load of posts on what to look out for. The main one is electrical problems, especially in D9s (facelift, late 1999 onwards) where repairs can be horribly expensive. Anything else can usually be repaired cheaply if you're so inclined. The main problem with saloons is a wet spare wheel well spilling out to wet carpets caused by a bad seal on a rear light cluster. Use it as a bargaining chip but it's an easy fix.

Re: Hello Everyone
Hi,
Thanks for the response, running out of 4,200 is quite low as typically most turbo charged cars really only kick in about 3,250-3,500. Currently driving a little Saxo VTS death trap though would admit does take of, but looking for something bigger.
Can't deny coupe's do look good but if parts are hard and costly that does put the "want" for a coupe down quite a bit.
I'll have a poke around see what interesting info on here i can see.

4200rpm is quite low, but the car has a very flat torque curve which means it'll pull nicely from very low revs - it'll easily out-pull the V6 between 1000rpm and 3000rpm! I once towed a Clio in my tubby, and tbh half the time I didn't really notice it was there, that's how torquey it is. Trying to pull that tubby to the scrappers using a V6 did however require a different driving style to keep the revs up
It'll also give a golf GTi a hard time between about 70mph and 120mph (probably because you don't need to change gear, unlike the GTi). It's a very nice engine, but it's very different!
Don't forget that most of the coupe is exactly the same as the estate/saloon, so unless you mangle the bodywork or need new brakes/wheels, repairs should cost the same. Be aware however that V6 tyres are almost twice as expensive due to the 149mph 'W' speed rating. I've had my V6s well over that speed (around 160mph), and I've clocked the tubby at something like 134mph on the GPS.
The coupe WILL feel faster than a saloon/estate though due to the harder seats and suspension.
