how far to lower?

Discuss the 406's Bodywork stuff in here (what parts fit what, what can be interchanged with what etc etc).

If you can cope with the width without rubbing anywhere, go for 225/45/R17, they have exactly the same O/D as the standard 195/65/R15. 205/40s are waaay too small (6% or 38mm smaller), and even the 215/45s are a bit small (1.5%, 9mm), although in reality they's be fine.

James' suggestion of 225/50/R17s would be too big at 3.6% or 23mm bigger.

The max recommended difference in diameters is plus or minus 2.5%.

For more info see here.

If you want to lower the car by 40mm and not scrape the bumper or exhaust i strongly suggest you get at least 18 if not 19" wheels. I have owned my 406 7 yrs, i had it modified by eccosse in 2001 with full touring kit and loads of other stuff and lowered 40mm, i made the mistake of putting 17" wheels on,
its great on a flat piece of road, our roads are notoriously sh*t and speed humps just makes it more difficult.
