Replacing chrome inserts -other options?
I'm going to be having a bit more work done on the car in next few weeks, and one of the things is to sort the chrome inserts - some are good and some aren't.
I'm thinking of changing the colour, but on a Sherwood Green car, i'm not sure there are many options for different colours.
It may just be a case of fitting a coloured strip over the existing insert, but the corrosion on some of the existing inserts means they need changing regardless. I guess a trip to the breakers, or see if any of the members have ones suitable, or bite the bullet and stick with the chrome and buy new, but not sure on price, as confused, as thought I seen on here someone saying it was dirt cheap on the D8, whereas someone else said it wasn't cheap.
Any suggestions on colours, and options greatfully recieved.
I did have this mad idea at one point of blacking the side ones, and trying to source some DRL's to fit into where the insert sat - obviously white front and red rear, but I tried the idea on a couple of mates and they didn't rate it.

No thoughts then?
Does anyone know how much new chrome inserts are for a D8?
Just so I know

Re: Replacing chrome inserts -other options?
Was in stealers yesterday to get some trim clips, as the painter took the mouldings off my doors to paint them.
Whilst there I asked about the chrome inserts and was told I couldn't buy just the insert, although i'm sure I read on here you could, and basically it equates to £50 a door, around £50 for the front bumper and almost £80 for the rear bumper, so as good as £330 for them

I think DaiRees bought a new rubber strip for the back of his estate which came with the chrome strip already?
Thinking about it I'm not sure you'd be able to separate the chrome bit for changing it? certainly can't remember anyone changing these bits on here

I've had one lift so I'm sure you could get them off, possibly using a bit of heat and a lot of care. Then it'd be a matter of finding something the right width to replace them with...

It took me a while to recognise that, that's the one across the bottom of the boot lid. The other three for the back bumper on the estate are all one part and preposterously expensive

I'd just get used mouldings from the scrappy in decent condition and use those. I think the chrome inserts are essential on the D9. They give it a very distinctive look.

I still have the door strip that was replaced when that twit drove into me in Lidl car park, when I go home later (and if I'm not too knackered after mowing for a couple of hours) I'll see what sort of effect shining the heat gun on it on the chrome strip.

Re: Replacing chrome inserts -other options?
I've been home, mowed two lawns and...
I shone the heat gun on it to soften the glue over about 6" so I could get a wide-bladed stripping knife in between the insert and the moulding, levering from underneath it came away without too much effort. Then, with a little more heat as I went, I worked a Stanley knife blade along to the ends. The moulding was damaged already but I don't think I made it any worse.
I didn't heat it up too much, a hairdryer would be good enough.
The only problem is the insert is a weird shape and it tucks in each end, it might be a case of taking a moulding along to Halfrauds or whatever and seeing what you can get away with.
Hth

At the moment, the whole lot has been primed, and as we speak, the guy should be putting paint to them, and may leave the whole lot colour coded.
I certainly think the side ones won't look out of place like that. The front and rears may be different, but you lot can comment on that if you like
I'll post some pics up when there is a sunny day after I get the car back - probably about August
