Trim various!

Post by JonL »

Right the car, as some of you will know, is a 1999 D9 estate in everyone’s favourite colour, red. I currently have two trim issues;

Firstly the black strip that sits between the roof and the sides of the car, under the roof rails, has come loose at the rear. It looks like this short section, from the boot opening to just behind the passenger door opening, has come loose and popped out. There is a short tab that might sit behind the longer section that runs over the passenger door and onto the driver’s door. I can push it back in but it pops out again almost immediately. Can I just glue this down? Do I need to remove it completely and clean the underside before I do? Do I have to purchase a replacement piece of trim?

Secondly the long rubber seal that runs along the bottom of the drivers side doors, under both the drivers and passenger’s door, has become detached from the mounting lugs. This has, probably, been caused by my smallest daughter dragging her heels over it as she gets out of the car and at least on of the fitting lugs is now missing. The rubber itself is somewhat distorted and has a couple of small lumps taken out of it but it will clip back to some of the lugs, for a while at least. The door does not leak and I do not have any of the normal problems associated with water ingress (other than a misty front screen but I think that is just normal for a 406!). So can I just glue this strip in place? Do I need to purchase a new strip? Would a new strip come complete with the mounting lugs? Do I need to completely remove the rubber and clean everything before gluing it all back together?

As ever thanks, in advance, for the replies,

Jon

You could try to use a hair dryer to heat the rubber. Put it back in place and then use an air spray can to cool it quickly. This way, you can mould the rubbe back into the bracket.

For the trim on the sill, its a very common 406 issue and a cheap fix. See link

Roof trim - mine's glued down. Door seal - clips are cheap from Pug. If the rubber's damaged I don't think they're too pricey from Pug (Service Box isn't giving out prices today :roll: ). I think you'd be better off putting them back with a dob of silicone though, sills are horrendously expensive. Clean out the drains while you're there, they're just under the end of the arch liners on the inside of the bottom lip seam thing (feel along with your fingers and you'll find them)

Actually cleaned the car and applied polish so the car rebelled by dropping the roof trim off completely! I will clean the valley it sits in the then re-fit with a small amount of silicon to assist with the bonding! Are there any specific glues I should use / avoid? I will purchase the clips and sill/door seal and fit that as well sometime in the next week or so.

The lower doors rubber seal was about £25 for me online (mine was splitting). Included an extra bag of the clips too (which are cheap enough).

The only glue you should probably avoid is something that's too permanent - you never know :?
