Alloy security key - who's a silly Doggy?

My Mums Ford KA came without an alloy key and she found out at the dealer that it's cheaper to replace the whole set of lockers with a new key :?

The key was £47.00? and the new set was £28.00 or something. They wouldn't say how they got the old lockers off but they didn't mess up the wheels so...... :|

I'd maybe replace the set?

Won't these tyre places have a bucket full of old keys to try??? just a thought, if not I bet they're dab hands at getting old lockers off

I have made some progress.
Phoned newbie stealers in Kettering this morning.....
'Need a replacement anti-theft key'
'Why'?
'Cos I lost it'
'Oh well, if you've lost it, you've lost the number too, so that's it, I'm afraid'
'Are you sure'?
'Yes'
'Are you sure you're sure'?
'Yes'
'How long have you dealt with Peugeot's then'?
'Getting on for 2 months'
'And you're really sure you're sure'?
'Yes'

So I picked up 4 non-locking bolts at £2.11 each

Next, I'm going to get a big hammer and enquire as to whether the locking bolts would like to undo...

That's almost it - same gubbins, different pin positioning. I guess there's a lot of permutations & finding the right one would be like winning the lottery or the handbrake holding in neutral on a steep hill....

When the tyre place broke my locking wheel nut key I got the local mechanic to weld an old nut over the top of the wheel nuts so that they could be removed. Cost me a fiver and ten minutes.
The cheap tools wont grip on dogslife's wheel nuts, if they are the type with the 'mushroom' centre. (The mushroom shears off.)

Well, I got one out between showers this afternoon. Think I may have found a fairly easy way....

Decided to try drilling it out, but the only decent quality, sharp drill bits to hand were a 3mm long series, a 17/64" and a brand new 11mm. The 3mm went in fairly easily, but knowing it would snap given half a chance, I went in about 6mm, opened it out with the 17/64, then a bit deeper with the 3mm. After about 15mm, thought I'd try the 11mm - as stealthe suggests the end just shears off. (the end bit's about 18mm diameter, but necks down to about 8mm diameter about 5mm in - designed this way to snap off if you try to turn it)

As you can see from the pics, I virtually drilled the head off down to the M12 threaded section, but you don't need to go this far. I unscrewed it after hammering my 1/2 - 3/8 impact socket adapter into the 11mm hole, to a depth of about 6mm :D

I reckon you only need drill it about 8 mm deep, which is fairly easy with good quality HSS bits - the 3mm was about blunt after one bolt and I'm hopeless at sharpening them, so I'm gonna get a few more small bits before I do the others.

The security key pictured is the wrong one for this bolt :frown:

Sorry about the picture quality. I'm hopeless wiv a camra too

Hooray! \o/ :cheesy:

Looking at that I don't think you'd have got one of those tools to it. I also reckon you'd not get far with a cordless drill...

Tell me, what's that thing that looks like a donut and are there any markings on the key?

The 'donut' is the bit that sheared off the end when I introduced it to the larger drill...

"Go ahead, make my day"

"This an 11.0 mm Sherwood HSS special - the biggest drill in the toolbox....
Now did I drill 5 holes, or was it 6"?

There are some markings on the key - looks like:

M4
X2

Ah, so maybe you could get one of those tools to it :frown: (not many cars have locking wheel nuts/bolts here so I've not seen Pug's variety).

I was wondering if it was worth making a note of the key numbers - hey, I lost the key for my Ashtray's bolts so I know it's not just you (what can I say? It was 2 am, middle of nowhere, pi$$ing down and I hadn't got a torch...)
