I've just searched for my lawn mower thread but can't find it :x

The Briggs & Stratton 4 stroke engine states an oil change every 50 hours :) Basically, at the start of each mowing season I drain the old oil and put in the new, change the spark plug and clean my ubber home made Pipercross filter 8)

Last year the pull cord decided to stick and not retract properly so each time you gave it a tug (oo-er) you were left with 3 feet of pull cord waving around  several kicks and smacks would slowly send it recoiling into it's housing. I think I will have trouble with it this season for sure. I might frigg up Formula 1 style crank start (with a battery drill)

Hmm, I think you'll regret that if your lawnmower's got any compression at all...

I've never changed the oil in my lawnmower :cheesy: (mainly because it's two stroke) It's actually one of my dad's old Flymos my bro smuggled here two years ago (I'm f*cked if I'm paying import duty on an old lawnmower  ). I get people giving me double-takes when I'm mowing out front because they've never seen a lawnmower without wheels before. I did have one with wheels I bought here but it was crap on my garden, there's too many ups and downs and I basically had to bully my bro to bring something decent.

It started mis-firing a couple of years back and I figured it could do with a de-coke, I wasn't sure if it might need reeds or anything so I took it along to the local lawnmower shop to see if they could get spares for it. The guy threw a wobbly though - "we can't get spares for it, it's Swedish!" I tried to point out the "Made in England" sticker on it, as well as that the engine was German, but he was having none of it. However, he had no problems taking my Husqvarna strimmer... The moron probably thinks it's a domestic product.

Torque man, torque. You'd have to use a reduction gear even if you do possess a 24v jobbie. You'll probably find your pull start's full of rust and hard grease, plus the spring's do eventually go weak. At least you can get spares...

I've heard much louder 4-strokes. Anyway, the engine's so simple I had it in bits, & back together in an afternoon. No worries about getting it reed valves, it doesn't have any! The engine was sparkling inside, it still even had the honing marks in the bore. And after all that it turned out the butterfly shaft had gone stiff. :frown:

How did you get the oil out without the petrol pouring everywhere? Is there a sump nut or something? Sorry about my ignorance I haven't had chance to even look at my mower since the wife's mini cooper (sparkling as new) is wedged in the garage waiting for some punter to part with their cash and buy it, hopefully someone will ring up for a viewing this weekend and take it off my hands - I need to mow the lawn!!!!!!!

They have a sump drain. That one looks very similar to the B&S limp on my other half's, I was thinking if Welton tipped it the other way it'd kindly soak the air filter in oil for him.

Well, it's warmed up chaps, the snow's all gone and guess what I'm off to do now!

Wow, I didn't know it had a sump plug, I thought I would have to tip it upside down or something! What oil do you put in it, same as the Pug stuff or is it special and expensive cos they say it's special even though it isn't?!!!

I bet it's fun getting that plug out Welly with all the encrusted grass & crud!
I like the scissor lift steps, very effective!
I couldn't justify getting a petrol mower for the pissy bit of lawn in our garden. One day though!

Look closely at the picture my friend: (the oil and spark plaug were a tenner I think from B&Q)

This one's 3.5, looks exactly same tho. It's gone right rusty underneath, don't you hate it when the last person to use something doesn't bother to clean it? With 3 dogs it's not my idea of fun. I was wondering what to paint it with, does the team think underseal would be a good plan?

How about a liberal brushing of old engine oil?
