Not on estates or coupés...
The easiest mostly-foolproof way is to determine if the heated windscreen button is on the same row as the hazard light switch (D8) or with the heater controls (D9).
Of course there's always the hazard light switch plastic colour - black (D8) or red (D9), or the position of the instrument cluster dimmer - by the driver's knee (D8) or on the left of the instrument cluster (D9)

I think the best way to characterise between the D8 and the D9 is mention that D8's have orange side repeaters and D9's have clear ones. This even includes the coupe

Those can be modified away very easily by throwing a couple of quid at ebay...

Boys boys boys,
the side trim is black on D8s and has a silver chrome insert on the D9s, the front grill is slatted on D8s and mesh on D9s.
couldnt be simpler

That doesn't apply to the coupe though - the differences between a D8 and a D9 coupe are more subtle. I can't tell the difference externally, only by peering through the windows at the centre console (the MFD and aircon controls are different between D8 and D9 models).
The slatted grille/meshed grille difference is the best one to look for on saloons and estates. When tailing another 406, I look for a horizontal groove across the boot lid - if there is one it's a D8, if not it's a D9.

Try telling my old 1998 D8 Saloon:
and my 1999 D9 Coupé:

Also try telling that to my second D9 saloon. Black door handles, black mirrors and chromeless side trim. I sorted all that out fairly quickly though. That SR or 'L' model was common in ireland from 99-00 before they went colour coded and chromed as standard
edit: that D8 saloon is sensual Matt!!! Theres nothing like a chromed and specced out D8!

Can you not see the mould in the chrome strip, especially near the headlamp washers? :/
Prefer the coupé

The V6 was a cracking car, I was very tempted to relieve you of it at the time!

I was gonna say "topping up the coolant again" but it's the wrong side!
