So i've managed to get a long scratch along the side of my car, very deep in one place. I've researched bodging the job myself and pretty confident i can do all the bits and bobs with filler, primer etc.

I read that i can take my VIN to Halfords and that they can match my cars exact paint for me (my GLX is white)

What i'm worried about is that my cars white will probably have slightly faded over the 12 years of its life and when i get round to doing this job, the colour obviously might not match and the job could look a bit patchy.

I'm thinking along the lines that a slightly different shade of white is better than a horrific scratch, so has anyone repaired deep scratches themselves and experienced the paint fade matching problem? I'm not planning to sell this car on at any point, so i'm not worried about getting a whole panel re sprayed etc.

It happened leaving a small car park, someone hadn't bolted one of the gates shut on one side - cue gust of wind, and rusty pole from gate into the side of my car whilst driving through. Annoyance

If your paintwork has faded, you might find that a good rub with T-cut or equivalent will restore its lustre. Failing that, just be cautious with the touch up paint and try to test it in an inconspicuous area ^_^

How does white paint fade?

I'd imagine it loses its pure whiteness, goes a bit dull and grey? Maybe 'fade' isn't the right word...

Meh, paint the bugger day-glo green and have done with it ^_^

I wish i remembered to take photos etc, but i guess most regulars here know how to do all this amateur paint rubbish! to be honest, this is the first car i've had that's worth fixing!

I purchased a few things to get started and today sanded down some of the bad scratches and applied filler to the worst parts, allowing it to dry out properly and then sanding to the matching contours. There was about an inch long chunk ripped out in one place near the rear door, but i've shaped it well. Going to primer it soon and then hopefully pick up the white paint stuff from halfords. I figure i'll do one small bit to start and see how it turns out before mutilating a larger part.

I took my VIN number along to wankfords, but they said i needed the paint code and recommended ringing Peugeot who would give me the details, which i shall do soon (better than searching within the door panel etc i reckon)

Main problem solved for now though, it's been pissing down and was worried about rust etc. Maybe i could take some pics still, but i doubt it would be that interesting really?

The main long scratch is dented a little, so i was thinking of using filler to level/repaint. Who knows, lol!

Sounds ok, the main thing about painting is make sure theres no dust that always ruins the thing for me

My downfall is usually due to lack of patience, not letting one coat dry thoroughly before applying the next. Oh, and poking it with a finger in the sincere belief that it's dry and it's not...

There's three steps to painting anything which you need to follow for best results. They are preparation, preparation and, erm...

the paint code is on the front suspension strut(well it is on mine]

I'd go to a motor factors who specialise in paint.

Drive the car there and they can colour match on the spot.


When my car had some paint done, the supplier had 4 different shades for my paint code, and non of them matched, so they made some up there and then.

If we knew location, someone might now somewhere local to you to recommend.

Anyone know a motor factors in the greater Belfast area that can match paint? Particularly KMWC Monaco / Paina blue somewhere between the midnight blue shade Peugeot made up and the arden blue shade halfrauds mixed up.
