My outside temp reads 46 degrees c and my aircon doesn't work - just got the car so i'm not sure if teh two are related.. I read that the outside temp disconnects the aircon when temp below freezing so I am assuming that it's not the cause of my aircon working and it's worth trying a re-gas? Any adive greatfully received.

Hi there,

The two faults are unrelated. The aircon will work with the temperature sensor misreading, but some of the automation of the A/C doesn't work quite right.

You can replace the sensor; they're a fairly cheap part (about £17 from a Peugeot dealer), and are fitted by removing the glass from the passenger wing mirror, snipping off the old sensor, and soldering on the new one. As an alternative, if you're not happy about soldering (like me), then you can buy a complete passenger-side wing mirror (or rescue one from a scrappy) and replace the whole unit (you may need to swap over the colour-coded shell if you take one from a car that isn't the same colour as yours).

As for the aircon itself - you need to get the system pressure-tested, and if it passes the pressure test, get it re-gassed. There's also a chance it could be the compressor, which is an expensive repair job. Owing to new legislation (as the aircon gasses are not great for the environment), only a certified aircon specialist is allowed to perform this work, it's no longer a DIY job.

Cheers
Graeme

Thanks for the info - i'm fine with soldering, it's getting the mirror glass off without breaking it that i'm having a problem with - any tips?

With care! Use the electronic tilting function to tilt it all the way back (so it's looking up). Underneath the glass you should be able to see a little clip, which holds the glass in place. You should be able to prize open the clip using a small flathead screwdriver and a lot of care.

When you remove the glass, be careful - if you've got a car with heated mirrors, then there will be wiring for the heating element stuck to the back of the glass. You don't want to damage the element or the wiring for that while you are working on the sensor.
