Rusty Sills

Post by pfusi1 »

Well it seems to have come at me out of nowhere but the car has just failed on seat belt anchor points being excessively corroded. Admittedly that might be a rather over-blown statement from a rather over zealous MOT examiner but there is definitely a problem nonetheless.

Seriously, the o/s sill is actually rather rusty, so much so it requires a replacement sill. The n/s sill has got a new plate welded on to it and although not as neat as the original sill it is a tidy enough job.

Anyway, in short, is there anywhere you can buy a new sill from? I don't want to scrap my car and I don't want to go out and buy something else that might be in even more dire need. I've got some very competent chaps willing to weld it for me for nothing so it's literally just a sill to find. Right now I'm entertaining fanciful ideas of getting a nice tidy shell (probably in china blue) and putting all my bits on to that - imagine what a knowledge base article that would be.

I do hope this isn't going to cost me too dear. I can't afford the insurance any more. Five years no claims, no accidents and the damn thing has gone up by £100. I am feeling really robbed - somebody give me some good news!

sills i think are not available to buy you will need a good metal worker / welder for the job,,
it shouldnt cost that much really ...

my car is a 1998 and sills are spot on no rust at all
maybe sum1 has bumped it under there at sum point taking the paint off and that will start the rust

and as for your insurance going up £100 , think yourself lucky there mine and many other people i know had a rise of at least £200 this year

Sill rot seems to be due to the drains being blocked and water sitting in them. You can get sills but a donor car would be cheaper. I made my one out of a sill from a fiat

AAAAArrggg. You know when you see a small rusty hole in your sill, and think i shouldn,t touch that!! But do any way and end up with half the sill missing..
Well thats me  . Has anyone fitted a sill from a Mk1 cortina as suggested or can you get a D8 406 sill drivers side somewhere. I,ve got 2 months before the MOT, so time to get the sill and find some one to weld it in place. Or i could put it on ebay as is and then buy a 1.9 to run on veg oil

No, I wished I'd touched it sooner before it was such a disaster. The only way you'll get a proper 406 sill is to cut one off in the breaker's or go to Pug (££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££). It really depends how bad the sill is, you might be able to patch it up unless the whole sill is tinworm.

just find some one who can weld and get them to make up plates,

the side off an old twin tub or fridge does the trick

I think garages are ok with laptops but expect you to scrap the car when it gets rusty, i only have a arc welder at home. I could buy a mig welder but i dont think i would use it enough. Its getting hard to find someone to weld a car nowadays with out charging the earth.

if you can weld with mig hire a welder and get someplates welded over the bad parts, 8)
you can always tidy up the welds after wards with some JB weld ,
