Rust

Post by leestudd30 »

How are 406's for rust issues? My 97 vectra b rear arches were/are terrible but the 10 year old J plate 405 I had years back had just one tiny spec of rust on one of the rear pillars. Were 406's rust proofed/galvanised from the factory?

Usually pretty good as the body is galvanized, but you can still find it:

Generally they are very good indeed, which one reason I chose a 406 as they seemed miles better than other equilvelant cars of similar vintage. Do check the sills, as the odd car has the drain holes undersealed over at the factory, trapping water. Mine has rusty sills which will be sorted shortly, but otherwise the underside is very solid and for the most part still has the factory paint or underseal.

I would add about the 405, they were prone to rotten rear chassis legs, mine is in the garage with these cut off awaiting replacement. Compared to the 405, the 406 is far more rust resistant.

There is a small amount on the one I bought at the bottom of the arches, is there anything I can do about that?

The boot is also losing the lacquer, is there anything I can do about that too, without spending a fortune?

We came to a conclusion on here that if you find a 'rusty' 406 or one with dodgy paint then its most likely been in the repair shop at some point.

'Hidden' rust seems to be the worst problem but generally the 406 in way better protected than any Mercedes, Ford or Vauxhall of the same era.

Well I found some Halfords stuff that sounded useful, going to try using some of this:

And how do I find which kind of white my car is? I've noticed there is arctic white, alpine and bianca white!

Grab the paint code - which is printed in the engine bay of the car, or run the VIN through PeugeotPlanet!

On a D8 like yours, the paint code is a four-character code that should be printed on top of one of the suspension posts.

You can put the VIN into the ServiceBox website (http://public.servicebox.peugeot.com), and it should give you a run-down of the characteristics of your specific car (what features it has, what options it was ordered with, paint codes, manufacture dates, alloy wheel options, etc etc etc).
