Rust

Post by Gary406 »

on the car i just bought its rusty round the aerial quite bad.... what stuff can i dab on there to help slow it down.... i've seen KURUST says it turns rust to normal oxide in 15 minutes ... if i use then but a bit of primer and paint over that it might help to stop the water getting at the rust under it...

so has any1 used KURUST or any other stuff that i could use to stop rust in its tracks ...

I use KURUST whenever i'm patching some paint. Cant vouch for how effective it is compared to not using it as i have never done a comparison. seems to work nicely.

see how it goes over this winter . but if it looks like its spreading fast i will

1. remove aerial
2. grind a square out around the rusted area
3. get my brother in law to weld a square plate back on smooth it off and touch it up with paint
4. drill and replace aerial..

shouldnt be to hard of a job really once done should be ok .

just dont want it spreading towards the windscreen thats all.

No need to weld it mate 8)
if it was welded roof lining wouid have to come out :(

Best substitute for welding is Jb weld sets like steel and wont rust again,
can be easily sanded too,

Is the red on your car laqured?
If it isn't then painting it should be easy as long as you got a good match as if it's faded a little polish will bring it back up.
Otherwise it's inevetable you will have a patch on the roof the total wrong colour.

Did abit of rust patching up in the same spot on my 406. Grinded away all the surface rust until I had decent metal, where it was too bad gone I cut it out with a dremel and patched it up a little bit at a time with fiberglass, skimmed it with filler and sanded back. Then primered and give it to a bodyshop to blow it in. Couldn't notice after that and never game back :)

sam do you know how2 remove aerial ??

think im gonna do what you did. sand down the rust untill i get good metal and fill and smooth it with filler. then paint over it ...

i will get all materials week after this week (get xmas out the way) and then hope for a dry day.

1st job will be removing aerial cos water is slightly leaking past it now ...

if i sand all the rust away then fill on top will that stop it from spreading ?

once aerial is re-fitted i will use a small bead if tigerseal around it to stop water going under it

Best thing to do is Apply Krust, leave that on a few days,
then sand /grind off any rust, until you get ashiny metal apearing & level off with filler or whatever you chose to use,
then 2 or 3 coats of primer,

if its only a small area, Iwouidnt use Body filler or fiber glass its a waste of space and makes more work,
body filler/ fibre glass is only anygood for filling big dents imho,

if you have to sand/grind alot of rust out the area, jb weld or any liquid metal is best bet to level off and your car remains 99%metal - and its cheaper than Body filler or fibre glass,

is the paint on your car Metalic? if so iwouidnt try spraying in this cold weather , you need a warm area for Met paints,

Hi mate,
yeah you can smooth down Jb weld, it sands easily enough, its alot less sanding than filler,

just get a couple of wet and dry medium
and one course if its a small area,

you can level off jb weld with a dab of water, so theres not much leveling off involved if you take your time with it,
