How easy is it to replace the dirvers mirror on my 1998 2.1TD estate?
Its a manual one.
The cowling is all smashed and the glass srazed and its MOT time next week!
Do i need to replace the whole assembly including the joystick thing inside the car?

Never done one on a 406 but I've done several on various other cars in the past, most recently when the Mrs decided to smash one off against our gate pillar. They're usually piss easy to change..
I'd say change the whole thing, probably easiest option.

Go to the breakers and buy another complete with manual joystick thing. I'm sure if you can separate them but anyway it's probably much easier not to. There's 3 torx screws holding it on, if memory serves two are under little covers which you prize off with a little screwdriver. Try not to drop the screws down the inside of the door!

Just as Steve said; 3 torx screws.
Wind the window down to start with.
You have to prise off the plate with the joystick rubber & pop the rubber off the end of the joystick; remove torx screw.
There's a cover just inside the door & on the door card; pop these off & remove screws; magnetic screwdriver for screw inside door card!!
Give the mirror body a wiggle; it'll be stuck on the rubber gasket but will pop off quite easily; job done!
