Halfords DIY glass chip repair kit?
So there I was in Halfords buying all the dashboard bulbs they had (i.e. two) when I idly asked about the chip in my windscreen. The pimply till-jockey pointed me towards their DIY kit, which apparently involves popping a sucker over the offending area, injecting resin and then covering it with acetate.
Has anyone used this or heard whether it's any good? I'm a 406 pimp on a budget...

I had a screen replaced recently and the glass man said if you don't repair a chip straight away then it's pointless trying because water gets in there and you can't repair it well
Soemtimes it's worth stumping up the £50-60 on the insurance for a sparkly new screen, I did.

I'd do as Welly suggested if you've got fully comp insurance!

Ahh - I forgot about that. Funny, I kind of assume everyone is fully comp these days (I've been a fully-comper for about 15 years now) but to be fair I know it's hard to afford when you're young.teamster1975 wrote:if you've got fully comp insurance!
Insurance is a real bummer as when you reach 30 you can afford to insure just about anything on the road but you can't afford the car (wife/kids etc.) when the opposite is true in your 20's. Bastardo's.

This chip has been there since I bought the car last October. So far none of the repair guys giving me quotes asked if it was fresh or not...
I'm certainly not fully comp. Any guess how much a new or maybe a second hand screen from a breaker might be?

Re: Halfords DIY glass chip repair kit?
Autoglass or whoever have an advert on telly at the moment and they suggest calling them out "straight away" to repair the chip. I understand you get the best result this way. Don't get me wrong - they will repair it (the guy offered to repair mine first) but they can't allways make a perfect job particularly with old chips and you may still see a mark or blur on the screen and if that's in your line of view it will piss you off in no time.swiss wrote:So far none of the repair guys giving me quotes asked if it was fresh or not...
Be careful here, unless your *really* good friends with a glass fitter I'd stay well clear it's definately not a job to be taken lightly and requires all sorts of specialist tools and sealants.swiss wrote:Any guess how much a new or maybe a second hand screen from a breaker might be?

Re: Halfords DIY glass chip repair kit?
The problem is when water gets into the crack it stains the glass. When they inject that resin it shows up all the sh1t that's ingressed into the damaged area.swiss wrote:This chip has been there since I bought the car last October. Another thing to note if it's a crack you're getting done; sometimes it can make it worse. My screen had say a 1 inch crack; I had these muppets fill it with their magic resin but as soon as we had the first frost it started merrily spreading across the whole windscreen
