Never heared of rusty bits on 406s at all

. Unless it's been changed before

. The drainage holes in the sills sometimes get blocked resulting in the sills holding water, that wouldn't help.

It's probably had a knock some time and the water drain issue did the rest.
I looked on Servis Pox, you have to buy the whole side of the car...
No-one seems to be doing sills for the 406, so it looks like you'll have to ad lib it

You could either get hold some sheet steel and fabricate a bit to replace the "missing" part, or find someone who's dismantling a 406 and doesn't mind you turning up with an angle grinder, remove the offending section and weld it in (much better than the "cover" sills we used to get, I'm sure they're weak as sh!t and if you had a wee shunt the car'd fold up

).
I suppose it depends just how much sill is missing, any chance of a pic?

Best off welding something in, rather than tack welding a cover sill on it, IMO, unless you can get a decent continuous weld a la Dai Rees. If it's very near the B-post then you want it as strong as possible.
Always depends how big the hole is really, if it's only a couple of inches weld a plate in, grind it down and flatten it out with filler, if it's two feet, well, then you need a sill, either a section from a tin can cover sill or the relevant section from one in a scrapper. Preferably the latter.

Mechanic guy from a TV programme called 'Wheeler Dealers' where they take used cars in varying conditions, do them up and sell 'em on. Roughly half the programme is Ed talking you through mechanical stuff
